Book Description

A delightful combination of anecdotes and recipes straight from the heart of the fictional Karoo village of Corriebush. Author Lynn Bedford Hall has created a cast of characters and placed them in the kitchens, cafés and stoeps of this charming village, where gossip is as essential an ingredient as a well-chopped onion. Share the stories and recipes of Rosa, the local Italian beauty, homely Betsie, whose baking captivated a Scotsman, and Olympia, the tragic Greek widow who touched Daleen’s heart. Each of the six chapters includes a vignette of one of the women who call Corriebush home, followed by some of their favourite recipes, chosen to represent their diversity while capturing the essence of wholesome country cooking. Lynn’s unique style of writing makes her a perennial favourite and Fig Jam and Foxtrot is sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates a good tale, as well as a good dish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fig Jam and Foxtrot 9 Sept. 2008
Fig Jam and Foxtrot
A book to curl up with and savour. You don't have to have come from the Karroo for it to bring back memories. For me, it is the smell of the kitchen, hot days, rain in the veldt and on hot corrigated iron roofs and, last but not least, childhood. On the other hand, for those who enjoy the kitchen there is a wealth of recipes with a little bit of a difference in the way they are presented. I shall enjoy cooking many them. A lovely book for those with a sense of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Buy, novel and cook book in one! 30 Mar. 2006
By A Customer
This was an excellent read, both in gaining a feel for a small South African town and amusing in the author's characterisations. Brought back lots of memories to an old-South African. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that I haven't had time to test the recipes yet! They sound fantastic though, and I am raring to go... Looks like there is something for everyone.
My one difficulty is trying to decide where to keep it - in the lounge or in the kitchen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! 20 Nov. 2011
I borrowed this book from a friend and just could not put it down! For anybody that has any links to South Africa, or want to know a bit about the Karoo and it's inhabitants of many years ago, this is a must read!
And the recipes are just amazing, every one with a slight difference to the way we are used to think about them. I have already made some of them and cannot wait to do more....... the bobotie with a difference, the breads that are so easy, the curry potatoes, oh too many to name!
Thanks Lynn for bringing us this jewel!

As a child of Africa the nuances of this area did not pass me by. Great recipes scattered about amongst the light hearted tales woven through the book.
