Book Description

A unique biography of the Carry On phenomenon

Product Description

In August 1958, the opening scenes of a low-budget black and white film flickered onto cinema screens up and down the country. No one could have foreseen what impact Carry on Sergeant would have then and in the future. Not only did it become one of the top three grossing films for that year, it also kick started the longest running and most successful comedy series of all time.

Here, for the very first time, is the essential biography of this most treasured institution in the world of British cinema. Complete with exclusive interviews with cast and crew, and the debut publication of Vince Powell's script of Carry On Down Under, Fifty Years of Carry On is a must for any fan of the unique and ever hilarious spectacle that is Carry On.

Books based upon films or tv series can be a script, photographs, interviews, background data or plain reference. This book is a little of them all, but the best bit is the 180 odd pages of narrative history of the Carry On series, very readable. This takes us in linear form from the beginnings to possibly the last Carry On film, along the way looking at cut scenes, comments from the makers, and some background information. Covering so many films in so few pages the coverage may be sparse for a reference book, but places each film into a context.
Then we have a section with a bare list of the films, then another list of the films with the cast and crew listed - 62 pages.
The script of an uncompleted final film (Carry on Downunder) 48 pages.
First treatment and development ideas for Carry on Sergeant.20 pages.
There is an index to the main text, but if an actor is only listed in the cast section and not in the narrative, they are omitted from the index section.
The page counts above are approximate.
It is the first part of the book, the very readable narrative history of the series that really makes this book worth having and reading.

Carry On Reading! 17 July 2010
By SilentSinger TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The `Carry On' series of films hold a place in many a Briton's heart for being saucy, cheeky, a bit naughty and best of all, very British, so any book which provides a history of, plus an overview of the many films is most welcome in my eyes. Richard Webber, an author who has written an array of TV/Film related titles undertakes this mammoth task with aplomb and turns what could be construed as a rather mammoth task into something rather readable. His chronological description of the background, plot and cast of all of the films is extremely interesting, as are the little details about the various productions are a bonus to any fan of British Cinema. I loved the various pictures, plus it was interesting to read about the various aborted films and scan through the unedited scripts of some of the pictures.

Being a little puerile, I think I prefer the slightly more risqué elements of the 1970s films scripted by Talbot Rothwell, but that doesn't stop me wishing to rent some of the older pictures such as Carry on Nurse and Carry on Sergeant. In conclusion, a book which can be both enjoyed as a non-fiction work but would also serve as a useful reference book for any fan of the `Carry On' films.

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get to know the Carry On "universe" as it gives readers enough information about the various films and those both behind the scenes, and the actors/actresses without whom these films wouldnt exist.

As a "definitive" guide, this may not be the best book in all departments, but for anyone who loves the films, but has yet to buy any books on the subject, I say buy this first!.
