Amazon.co.uk Review

In all the slow, quiet bays and side streams off the main river shoals of piranha wait to chomp your morenita in half, so a step down in hook and bait size is imperative.
The face of British angling, television star, big fish specialist and author of countless excellent guides to the sport of rod and line, John Wilson finally reveals a little of the man behind the beard in a beautifully illustrated memoir.

From the 1950s when a generously quiffed teenager fished the waters of Enfield for roach to his most recent adventures in Africa and India, on the trail of truly monstrous mahseer and catfish, Wilson has travelled the world with a rod in one hand and a camera in the other. The results areimpressive and will have even the most stay-at-home angler reaching for the tackle box and travel brochures.

Unfettered enthusiasm and flair for self-publicity have taken him from cruiseship hairstylist to one-man publishing and media phenomenon. It's the sort of public profile that draws flak and his critics will have plenty to enjoy, but from behind his familiar peculiarities of style, the author emerges as a talented and industrious sportsman and communicator.

His "All-time Big Fish List" and the stories behind it are the final word on his abilities.

Characteristically readable and informative, with love of the natural world and fishing as his themes, Wilson reflects publicly for the first time on the personal meaning of a lifelong immersion in his own passions. --Alex Hankin

4.0 out of 5 stars It will now become one of my bedside books, 15 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fifty Years A Fisherman: The Autobiography of John Wilson (Hardcover)
Having read this book within four days of receiving it I can say that it is a very enjoyable read, glorious fishing tales interspersed with insights into the private life of Mr fishing, which only add to the book as John Wilson now appears to be a normal person instead of just the Presenter of Go fishing.

The tales of foreign exploits which do seem very attractive are tempered with many examples of fishing in the UK. Which you or I can relate to.

It will now become one of my bedside books (books that can be read many more times without me becoming bored) .

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book revealing the life behind the TV fisherman., 14 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fifty Years A Fisherman: The Autobiography of John Wilson (Hardcover)
John Wilson provides a candid study of his life, from North London urchin to hairdresser and on to TV fame. Proving that there is more to him than just his 'favourite uncle' appearance infront of the camera.
