If your reaction to this summer's most contentious literary phenomenon is Pavlovian, I recommend you try 'Fifty Shelves', the ultimate antidote. Containing more silly sex and sexual silliness than a school-boy's biology text-book, this tongue-in-cheek tome transforms fifty of literature's greatest hits into witty works of filth whilst retaining the signature styles and tones of each original. 'Lord Of The Rings' goes where you'd expect it to with a title like that - honestly, Tolkien, were you really that gauche? - and I particularly enjoyed the utterly smutty rendition of a Nigella Lawson recipe. The sophisticated sexual references make it possibly too outre as a gift to older readers of a certain sensibility, unless you're aiming for heart failure; other than that, be proud to read it in public and grateful that you don't need to subject yourself to the compulsive MSG of 'Fifty Shades'.

A very cleverly written amalgamation of risque versions of all our favourite books. Even without having read all of the originals you can enjoy the humour of this parody paradise. Perfect present material (for the age-appropriate recipients..) but definitely also worth buying yourself a copy and shamelessly chuckling away as you see the Da Vinci Code (among others) in a whole new light...

I thought I'd got the other book, wanting to read what everyone else was, but having made the mistake, I thought why not read the parody first? I can assure you that Vanessa's claim that we all turn to the dirty pages of novels repeatedly is not so in my case. 'Dirt' is not my daily sustenance. I approached this book with some trepidation - I had risked shocking my son. After all classics are classics and I was not sure I wanted to know what Mr. Rochester did with Jane Eyre, nor witness the deflowering of Pooh bear. This is a masterly work, well written, hilarious and silly. What a mind Ms Parody has, she can turn any situation into sex. Original, entertaining and naughty. Whatever happened to 'No sex please, we're British'. You'll never be able to think of any novel in the same light again. Unless you are a complete prude or easily shocked, you'll enjoy this. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's garden website.

So good! I really, really enjoyed this.
Try the free preview/look inside for a general idea of the book. But, honestly, certain sections had me howling with laughter.
If you're feeling the post-Olympic blues, give "Fifty shelves" a try!

Very silly, very funny, very smutty, very clever. Got given this as a pressie by my boyf and loved it, espec the last one -- a parody of 50 shades that sexes it down instead of up.

This is an hilarious collection of the world's greatest books, rewritten with the sex scenes their authors left out. It's smart and wicked in equal measure and had me laughing out loud. From 1984 to Nigella, via Tolkein, Tolstoy and the Da Vinci Code, Vanessa Parody has it covered. I really recommend this, for your own entertainment or as a gift for anyone you know who likes to read (and is over the age of consent).

I got this as a gift for a friend, and had a flick through it before giving it to her and was tempted to read the whole book!!!

very funny (minus the winnie the pooh chapter)...both my friend and I agreed is perfect book for toilet trips! short but sweet chapters of tongue in cheek humour.

This fantastic book works for two reasons. Firstly, it's based on a nice Big Idea: the creation of eroticised parodies of classic books. The second reason for its success is the quality of the writing. Packed with laugh-out-loud lines, I found myself constantly quoting bits of it to friends and family.
