Product Description

Review

`A master of modern noir, up there with Lehane and Ellroy, Fifty Grand is a blast...showcasing McKinty's brutal lyricism'
--John O'Connell, Guardian

`An impeccably constructed tale about personal suffering, told with candidness and wry humour... McKinty's unquestionably talented as an author of suspense.'
--June Caldwell, The Sunday Times (Ireland)

On thin ice 27 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
There is only one bad thing about discovering a wonderful, new (to me) author, and that is that I've got to find the time to read everything else he or she has written. Fifty Grand was my first Adrian McKinty novel, but it won't be the last. I'd heard plenty of praise for Fifty Grand, so expected it to be OK. It's more than OK!

Set in both Cuba and in Colorado and Wyoming, the story is about Cuban police detective Mercado, who sneaks into the US as an illegal immigrant, in order to find out the truth behind the death of her father in Colorado, six months earlier.

There's plenty of violence here, but above all, it's about Detective Mercado finding not just her father's killer, but finding herself. The reader gets interesting insight into the lives of the rich and famous in a ski resort in Colorado, as well as the drab ordinary life Mercado has temporarily left behind in Havana. And reading about what it's like for the illegal Latino workers in the US is a real eye opener.

Adrian McKinty is good at coming up with interesting characters, whether we like them or not. I particularly liked the man who sells weapons, and the pesky youth from Nicaragua. And I wouldn't mind knowing how he researched the shoving of dead people around on thin ice.

It's a cliché, but this was a hard book to put down. Read it! You won't be disappointed.

Awsome novel 24 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This was the first Mckinty book I had ever read. I took away with me on holiday last spring. I finished it in two days it could of been a day if I had not of been so busy. It really is a great read its one of those books you always dream of reading a cracking combination of social commentary with a thrilling and engaging story. The narrative centres around a female Cuban detective who defects from her country in order to find out what happened to her father after he was found dead in america as an illegal imigrant. The plot is fast and the dialogue gritty. I really enjoyed the distinct change of setting from most crime thrillers ie the city underbelly.

After reading this novel I read every one of Mckinty's Dead Trilogy and his other crime novel Hidden River. All of which I would suggest reading if you enjoyed Fifty Grand. He has two books coming out march I cannot wait.

A fierce novel! 19 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I have only recently 'discovered' Adrian McKinty and this is the first of his books I have read and the fourth he has had published. I thought I'd try it out and started reading on Monday - on Tuesday I ordered all three of his other books. I'm not even a big fan of crime novels but I love the way he writes and the characterisation is so strong. I totally recommend this book not only to lovers of crime and mystery but essentially to anybody who enjoys story-telling done exceptionally well.
