Product Description

Product Description

This is the true story behind the legend of the Brunei Darussalam National Football Team, almost but not quite, the worst international team in the world. Stanley Park, the alter ego of a desperate and disillusioned sporting romantic abroad, needs the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team of world soccer to bring him financial and moral salvation. Set in the alien cultural maelstrom of a near-bankrupt and comically corrupt Islamic despotism, Stanley's travails as the teams media manager illuminate football for what it truly is: a spherical, hand-stitched universe of heaven and hell. Kick or be kicked is football's moral imperative. A true Scouser, armed only with a yellow anorak and a war cry of "Giblets," Stanley Park's fight for justice in Brunei is a veritable sporting Jihad. "Better than Fever Pitch: more balls, more laughs, more giblets. The universal truths of football as uniquely revealed by Stanley Park." --Brian Reade, U.K.'s #1 sports columnist, The Daily Mirror

Proving that football is a worldwide religion, Stanley Park follows his dream to the altar of Brunei, finding his personal and professional life not going exactly to plan as he hitches his star to almost - but not quite - the worst international team in the world.

It's a rollercoaster of a read, gives you an insight into a whole new world, and has an unmistakeable truth to it for everyone who's ever played - or even thought about playing - football.

'Stanley' blows the lid on dodgy football in S E Asia. Set in a country where polo ponies have better facilities than school kids - do not be surprised by what you read.
I think Dennis Wise summed the country up well in the book.

No wonder it is banned there. The truth is not acceptable it would seem

First off, I have to admit I am not a football fan but if you have ever worked in an 'oil rich country' you will know where Stanley is coming from. There is more intrigue and side deals going on in these pages than at a CIA convention.
Throughtout the book you sense the authors passsion for football, any football, although I suspect a soft spot for the LFC showing through.
The book gave an interesting insight into 'What ever happened to? in the football world, well now we know, these ex players do get around don't they!
Altogether a well put together read it kept me hooked. As I said I am not a particular footbal fan but even I had my favorite Brunei player I was routing for in the final chapters. The authors use the celebrity match commentaries texts I thought where particulary good. I have since recommended the book to a number of people all with good response.
Makes a really good birthday or Christamas present for a football fan kin the family, my son thoroughly enjoyed the read.
