Book Description

20 Oct 2012
"Fierce Beauty is a celebration of tigers, leopards, lions, ocelots, and other wild cats that inhabit The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS), a wildlife preserve in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The institute s 50 acres are home to more than 100 rare animals, from ligers (a hybrid cross between a male lion and a tigress) that stretch nearly 12-feet long to cheetahs capable of running 70mph. Featuring dozens of exclusive new portraits from preeminent nature photographer Tim Flach, Fierce Beauty depicts the beauty, power, and grace of these remarkable creatures as never before. And with more than 300 images of wild cats and essays by such distinguished conservationists as zoologist and TV personality Jim Fowler, Dakota Zoo director Terry Lincoln, and a foreword by renowned actor Robert Duvall, Fierce Beauty enables readers to experience the vibrant form, bold markings, and striking personalities that make wild cats unique cohabitants of mankind."

1.0 out of 5 stars I Do Not Support Exploitation and Breeding of Captive Large Cats 6 Nov 2013
By girlfriday - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book paints a false picture of a hopeful, loving environment for Anjana and the other exotic animals at T.I.G.E.R.S. Unfortunately, the facility regularly exploits these animals for entertainment purposes, endangers the public by offering “hands-on” experiences, and breeds exotic animals, leading to a lifetime of unwarranted imprisonment. No reputable sanctuary would intentionally breed, nor would they put their animals on display or exploit them for entertainment purposes. Please do not buy this book for your children. It is highly misleading and purchasing it will only contribute to the continued exploitation of these highly intelligent beings.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent photos of beautiful big cats 11 Dec 2012
By S. D. Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This large-format book was well worth the wait. The photos are outstanding, and show the power, grace and beauty of these majestic creatures; the plain backgrounds really allow the cats to stand out. The author clearly cares about them, and they are treated with the love, respect and dignity they deserve. There is a wonderful spread of full-face portraits that encompasses several pages--I've never seen such a variety of the rare "golden tabby" color phase that, along with the white with stripes and the all-white stripe-less phase, only occurs in the Bengal tiger. The cover photo is of a golden tabby. If you love big cats, get this book. For those people who don't believe in zoos or wildlife sanctuaries, and who think that all captive great cats "should be returned to the wild", every day there is less and less "wild" in this world. Several of the essays in the book make this plain, along with the fact that a well-run, well-maintained sanctuary is a safer place than just about anywhere on the planet where these animals formerly ran free...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pictures are stunning. 30 April 2013

I disagree with the content as to how it portrays big cats. It is a personal opinion but that is how I express myself. I do not believe in cross breeding species...in wolves, big cats or anything else. It confueses the nature of the beast and like the big cat in this book it is unable to thrive due to the size of it's mass being hard on it's skeletal structure. My opinion. I just won't buy the author again but the pictures are beautiful.
