There is an unevenness to this book that makes me suspect it is a thesis that has been stripped down/ hacked apart to make the word limit.

If it had been merely a conversion to/ description in modern language of a *particular* historical document then ok; if it had investigated the veracity of the stories in the document then great; if it had investigated the philosophy of the tortures then ok. But this seems to be a hodge-podge of varying approaches including the attempt (it seems) to justify its writing by referring to more recent occurrences of the tortures described.

Ok as an introduction to the topic but I would not recommend it.

Good descriptions if limited in some aspects but does show the futuility of torture in whatever form it happens to take

This title showed limited research and a dry, repetitive tone. That aside good use is made of the available resource and it is scholarly rather than aimed a those looking for vicarious thrills.

I bought this book out of curiosity. Man is capable of truly barbaric acts, a lot of these tortures were, and still are, carried out in the name of justice.
It was an eye opener, but it's not a subject I'll ever read up on again.

Everything written is probably true because there has always been repressed people in this world. I am wondering how I managed to avoid all this s*** and have lived happily ever after.

Not for the faint hearted this book is pretty gruesome and horrific. Read at your peril.
I cannot Recommend as good bedtime reading.
