Product Description

Product Description

They each had their reasons for being a soldier.

They each had their illusions. Goodrich came from Harvard. Snake got the tattoo — Death Before Dishonor — before he got the uniform. And Hodges was haunted by the ghosts of family heroes.

They were three young men from different worlds plunged into a white-hot, murderous realm of jungle warfare as it was fought by one Marine platoon in the An Hoa Basin, 1969. They had no way of knowing what awaited them. Nothing could have prepared them for the madness to come. And in the heat and horror of battle they took on new identities, took on each other, and were each reborn in fields of fire....

Fields of Fire is James Webb’s classic, searing novel of the Vietnam War, a novel of poetic power, razor-sharp observation, and agonizing human truths seen through the prism of nonstop combat. Weaving together a cast of vivid characters, Fields of Fire captures the journey of unformed men through a man-made hell — until each man finds his fate.

A fantastic novel. I usually stay away from military books as they tend to be bogged down in techno-babble at the expense of the story, BUT NOT THIS ONE! From the opening chapter, I was gripped by the tale of three Marines in Vietnam, all from very different backgrounds and there for their own different reasons. Mr Webb, who was a highly decorated Vietnam vetran himself, doesn't patronise the reader by spoon feeding him/her with explanations of the working practises of a M-16 rifle, but instead shows the human face behind a very unpopular war.

Most heartwrenching of all is the reaction at home to the war and the people involved. Highly relevant today with public opinion divided about Iraq, this shows how the troops involved were completely demoralised by negative, and sometimes venemous, reactions from people who had limited understanding of combat.

I could not put this book down until I finished it!

Even if war stories are not your thing, give it a go. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Possibly the best book that I have read about The Vietnam War either fiction or real accounts. in my opinion only rivaled by Robert Mason's Chickenhawk. Also worth Searching out are other titles by the same Author.

There are many books which profess to be the "greatest novel written about Vietnam", and believe me, I've read a few in my time. Fields of Fire, for once, is a book that lives up to the epithet. Quite simply one fo the best books I've ever read.

Brilliant Book
Without doubt one of the best novels of the Vietnam war. As someone else posted apart from Chickenhawk this is as good as it gets. A fantastic read.

Agonizing truth
James Webb writes in such a way that you re-live the frustration and emotions, and the incredible sense of loss. Thankfully he captures what other books have failed to do. Read more
