Great sense of place, strong sense of rhyme,
By
This review is from: Fields Away (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this first published collection from Sarah Wardle. The poems display great range and depth, and Wardle uses her strong sense of rhyme to good and varied effect. An obvious appreciation of classical themes stops the lighter poems ('Buridan's Ass' and `Latin Love', for example) from seeming lightweight, and there's a deceptive depth in pieces like `How To Be Bad'. The density of Wardle's rhyme when dealing with her own schizophrenia creates a sense of intensity that matches the subject-matter perfectly - though I didn't think these poems always `worked', as they were sometimes almost maniacally full of ideas and images ('Flight' being a beautiful exception). Wardle excels at evoking a sense of place, blending both passion and technical mastery - as seen for example in `Villanelle' (on hop-picking). The odd misjudgement of tone apart (I thought both `After Blake' and `Hubris' were a bit second-hand, thematically), this is a most rewarding read.
