Book Description

1 May 2002 Corrie Herring Hooks Series (Book 51)
At the biological crossroads of the Americas, Costa Rica hosts an astonishing array of plants and animals - over half a million species! Ecotourists, birders, and biologists come from around the world to immerse themselves in the country's unspoiled rain forests, mountains, and beaches, drawn by the likelihood of seeing more than three or four hundred species of birds and other animals during even a short stay. To help all of these visitors and local residents identify and enjoy the wildlife of Costa Rica, this field guide presents nearly three hundred species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, moths, and other invertebrates. Carrol Henderson, an experienced wildlife biologist, traveller, and tour leader in Costa Rica, has chosen the species that ecotourists are most likely to see, along with a selection of rarer, sought-after animals. He gives a general introduction to each group of animals, followed by individual species accounts that highlight identification features and interesting ecological adaptations for survival. His stunning close-up photographs and distribution maps complete each entry. In addition, Henderson includes a wealth of data about Costa Rica's natural environment, as well as a trip preparation checklist and lists of conservation organisations, wildlife tourism sites, and wildlife vocalisation tapes and CDs. With so much information so readily and readably accessible, this field guide will be essential for planning and enjoying your time in Costa Rica. Carrol L. Henderson, a professional wildlife biologist, has made over twenty-five trips to Costa Rica since 1969 and has led over thirty-five birding and wildlife tours there and throughout Latin America since 1987. He lives in Blaine, Minnesota.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife of Costa Rica by Carrol Henderson 19 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
For those, like myself, who like to see all the wildlife of an area this book is excellent. It gives wide coverage of common birds and mammals, and more limited coverage of reptiles, insects etc. Included are colour photos, identification points, animal statistics and maps showing where the creatures were seen on previous group tours. I wish a similar book existed for other places I have visited.
It is large for a field guide but ideal as a reference book for non specialists.

4.0 out of 5 stars great pictures but very heavy 16 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this as I am off to Costa Rica treking soon. The book has fabulous photographs of each bird and animal it lists and is very informative right down to the great maps showing where each animal or bird can be found. HOWEVER, the one drawback is that as it lists so many birds, it is a very heavy book and therefore it is unsuitable for taking with us on our trip, a great pity. We will just have to look up the animals on our return from our photos !

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Wildlife of Costa Rica 15 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this wildlife guide to prepare for my trip to Costa Rica and it does not disappoint. The author is passionate about his subject. His enthusiasm and attention to detail, makes for an extremely readable guide. The photographs are delightful and give personality to the wildlife featured; these, together with the species distribution maps and comprehensive natural habitat detail, serve to enhance this vibrant guide. The author has also produced the guide in three separate volumes, and here is the conundrum, do you buy this reprint of the all in one guide first published 2002 which weighs in at a hefty 1.36 Kg, or go for one or more of the updated individual options? The product description for the individual bird guide claims the addition of 124 species on the complete works which focuses on just 186. But if you are looking for quantity there are several field guides on the market, for example Birds of Costa Rica by Garrigues and Dean includes 820 species. This guide stands out for the quality of the additional information included. Check out the `look inside' option for the individual guides as this provides an opportunity to experience the writing style you will find in this wild life guide. The Bird guide and the Butterflies, Moths and Other Invertebrates guide both have the identical introduction to that in the complete volume. I have also noted that several of the chapters in this guide would appear to be replicated in the individual guides. Although the paperback cover of this guide could be a bit more robust I consider it to be an excellent buy at the discounted price I paid of £17.59.
