Better than a trip to the zoo 9 Nov 2001
By E. Woodworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Being a "jam band" fan, I am always looking for new bands that can produce magic in the moment. The trouble is that many times these bands are unable to capture much of the enthusiasm and spontaneity of a live show onto a CD. I have had the pleasure hearing FLOYDIAN SLIP'S CD "Field Trip". This is one band that stacks up.

It is hard to believe this is just a quartet, because they have such a full and fun sound. One of the strongest tracks, "My Brother" is an excellent example of this. This single has an infectious groove, insightful lyrics, and hot licks. What more could you want?

Another favorite tune is "Another Way".

"She was joined by thousands who all came to see
The whole world sing out in perfect harmony
People were laughing, people were dancing the whole world was saved
She said I told you son, there's got to be another way."

Olaf Kirsten's voice (vocals and guitar) is unique in that it almost sounds fragile at the start, but then has a tendency to creep up on you. Before you know it, his voice is strong, fierce and solid. Aside from sounding great, his originals are inspiring, often hitting on deep and meaningful issues, and all the while, delivered in a danceable, funky tune.

Andy Noyes' (lead guitar) guitar licks and leads are unbeatable. I am surprised I have never heard him before on any studio work. Without being overbearing, he is able to weave his hooks and lines in and around a melody in the most pleasing and funky manner.

Jeff Kriner on drums (a former student at Berklee College of Music) is a master. His grooves are tight, solid and inspiring but his fills are downright scary. As he breaks into a polyrhythmic fill, you think for a moment "where is he going...how can he get back into the groove?" but in an instant he is back, never loosing a beat, and winning over the respect and admiration of the listener.

Josh Munter (bass) is as solid as they come. Never loosing the groove, he rarely steps out of the box, but when he does, it is only to provide a most satisfying and fat fill. Then he is back to the funky groove, something all great bass players do.

This band has something positive and new to say. In a world of over-produced, self-indulgent, self-important musicians who have traded in their muse for radio play and residuals, I say "kudos" to Floydian Slip. With a sincere and honest sound, they are doing it right. They are independent, inspired, and open.

This CD has been in my player for almost three weeks straight, and I am not sick of it at all. That says it all right there. I continue to hear new things that amaze me. Even though this band has a grassroots beginning, I predict they will be a breakout band shortly. They are making a name for themselves in the Midwest. Check them out if you can. Their live show is a treat.

"" Lets Go on a Field Trip " 27 Nov 2001

FLoydian Slip's Field Trip CD takes people to a whole new style of music. I think this CD provides you with a sense of being in another place. I think that trip starts on the first song "Transcend" Material discenagrates to create the feeling of being perfect in a messed up world.
Since the september 11 attacks the song " Another Way" makes me wish that lady in lacey white would show and make the world look at things another way.
The musical Field Trip takes you a lot of places other music can't.
Even after seeing just about every show and hearing the CD every time I put music on I never get tired of it. THe group is very fun and they have fun when they preform.
Please this band by buys the CD and sharing your trip with others and keep an eye out in your town for the chance to see the boys live and in concert.
