Product Description

Review
"Stephen Gill's photographs have all the naove gusto of the field studies series of old. Mercifully lacking in sarcasm and malevolent irony, they are also wise and modern and beautifully laden with tiny, understated details about the way we live today" - JON RONSON

Synopsis
Since 1996 Stephen Gill has been making serial studies of mundane British scenes and objects - including cash points, lost people, the back of advertising billboards and people travelling on the London to Southend train. His visual approach is unique, combining conceptual rigour with enormous sympathy for his human subjects, and has already been widely appreciated in Granta and the New York Times Magazine, among others. His first book confirms his status as a key young vision in contemporary photography. With an introductory essay by humorist and TV filmmaker Jon Ronson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Studies : A Rare Perspective on the Everyday, 30 Aug 2004
By M. Agar "Wild Rooster" (Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stephen Gill's book provides an enlightening perspective on the everyday that we simply pass by when going about daily life. Stephen opens our eyes to what exists all around us, and provokes us to see what treasures can be found there. His series of photographs literally exploring what lies behind billboards is amazingly effective, with the captions actually adding to the compositions, while his exposure of the cult of the shopping trolley has led me to smile in recognition whenever I now encounter a woman with trolley on the street. As a commuter, it was a joy to see how Stephen has captured the expressions of train travellers lost in their thoughts on a Kent train, and even the cashpoint shots have a certain beauty in acknowledging the detail in something that we rarely allow a second thought. This book is an inspired treat that I would highly recommend to admirers of good photography as well as anyone who can appreciate an eye-opening view of what lies all around us.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Field Study Guide to Life Today, 5 April 2008
By Robin Benson - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
An aptly named book of 137 photos. The book's size, jacket and endpapers colour (olive green) are all nicely indicative of a field studies book from years ago. The photos of course are bang up to date and I could just imagine Stephen Gill getting rough prints and sticking them in a similar sized blank book, a sort of working reference and composition guide.

The eight sections are an interesting collection of what can be seen in everyday contemporary Britain though perhaps I should qualify that by adding that I think they are all taken in southern England. The sections are: folks listening to personal stereos (14) cash machines (5) ladies pushing shopping trolleys (15) sitting on a train (30) road works (25) gallery warders (11) the backs of street posters (24) and lastly, city strangers asking directions (13). All the people photos are very similar but visually benefit from changing backgrounds except for the thirty shots of passengers sitting on a train. Here, I thought, the photos are just too similar to make them all relevant, less than twenty would be adequate.

The best for me are the road works and the backs of posters. They are full of eye-catching detail and interest. The poster photos have a wonderful touch, they are captioned after the words on the front which we cannot see. Likewise the personal stereo photos are titled according to the tracks being listened to.

Overall an impressive photo collection but let down for me because of too many repetitive images in some sections though no doubt this is what a creative person's field study book might look like.

5.0 out of 5 stars STEPHEN GILL, 28 May 2004
By A Customer
This is such a unique insight into every day normal life in the UK. The subject matter(s) are so ordinary, but the photos make them seem so interesting, and each one can tell a story.
I think Stephen will have a huge impact in the photography world. He certainly deserves it.
