Wonderfully lyrical yet bitter-sweet, this magnificent recording by Benjamin Frith hasn't gathered much dust in my collection. Somewhere to the "Beethoven side of Chopin", this is a hugely relaxing and delightful hour of music for winding down to at the end of a long day. Buy Volume 2 for Nocturnes 10-18 as well if it's been a particularly bad one!

John Field created some very fine Nocturnes and the first nine of the eighteen are here along with two Sonatas.
Naxos have come up with a wonderful recording here of piano music by John Field. Here the music is performed by Benjamin Frith. He gives a good soft focus style that fits well to the Nocturnes on this recording. The sound of the piano performance is melodic and attractive. He gives a compassionate interpretation. Perhaps the performance could have been a little more intense, but this a minor point compared to the clear and calm mood of reflection that is just right.
There is drama and romantic passages in these lovely Nocturnes.
Things continue in a positive vein on the two sonatas. These are expressive and passionate.
The whole of the music on this recording is relaxing and emotional. It is a great example of how excellent John Field was as a composer.
The naxos sound recording is very good and generally this is a good package of pieces by Field.

I love every piece on this CD. The 5th Symphony is my favorite, but each piece is beautiful in its own way. From calm and peaceful, to simply beautiful. Field was very talented and I'm glad I discovered his work. A great addition to my classical music collection.
