These fresh-faced, smiling piano concertos do indeed have a Chopinesque quality, with the playing generating a delicate and beguiling charm.(Field's work of course pre-dated Chopin, so perhaps we should say that his work show's Field's influence?) Frith and the Northern Sinfonia under Haslam deliver a performance which revels in Field's lively variety of tone, modulation, rhythm and colour, is fluid and fluent throughout, with a real sense of new discovery. The acoustic is warm yet clear, allowing the music to sparkle with a crystalline clarity. This is only the first of an enterprising Naxos series on Field's shamefully neglected works; given the level of critical acclaim (Gramophone adjudge it a 'very formidable' account and, like the Penguin Guide *** make it a 'strong recommendation') it's to be hoped that this will introduce this deserving work to a larger audience. A beautiful bargain.
