Field Hockey Understanding the Game concerns itself, very successfully, with enlightening the mums and dads with children who play hockey (or the children themselves) and with the hockey education of any casual spectator. While it includes rules specific to field hockey within the American education system, which doesn't apply to me (as a resident of the UK), the passages about those rules are clearly marked and don't dominate the text concerning the FIH Rules of Hockey, which are the rules used in club hockey and in all hockey played in the rest of the world.

This book is better than any other book for umpires or players on the market that I have come across for explaining the rules of the game and it is a useful feature that it is updated regularly to take into account changes in the rules. The author Cris Maloney does his best to steer a middle path and to reflect 'current practice' or 'current interpretation' of the rules, because the FIH Rules of Hockey are far from clear. The phrase '”changes to the rules'” can cause 'red mist moments' to the likes of me, when what is obviously personal interpretation and completely unauthorized 'practice' by those officiating a match is assumed to be rule just because it is applied as it is.

Great book 20 Aug. 2013
By Hockey coach - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I absolutely recommend this book for field hockey coaches players umpires and parents. Wish I read this when I played a few years ago. I am now a coach and so glad I read this book. So detailed and provides quality insight about every aspect of the game from the proper size of the stick to obstructions, uniforms, penalty corners, Etc. written to inform umpires so there is nothing the book doesn't cover. It is not a play book though, but does focus on a variety of situations and allows you to answer on your own before reading correct answer.

This book is really helping me understand the game that my daughter is playing. Would recommend it for any parent that has a child playing field hockey and they did not play themselves.

Required reading! 15 Feb. 2014
By BAO DOG - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
After spending quite a bit of time watching field hockey, I decided to become an umpire even though I had no playing experience. This book was extremely helpful in explaining not only the specifics of the game and its rules, but also providing a wealth of tips on how to effectively umpire and manage a game. Even after I received my umpire rating, I find myself referring back to points in this book before I step on the field.

This book was also very helpful to me as a fan, giving me a much better sense of what was happening on the field and a greater appreciation for game as a whole.

Aid for FH Officials - By Field Hockey Umpire 31 Mar. 2014
By Larry - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
After spending time trying to grasp the complexities and meaning of the rules presented within the NFHS rules book on field hockey, I purchased one of Cris Maloney’s books. His clear and concise explanations and examples makes this a must read for parents and players seeking to further their knowledge. Officials wanting to improve their judgement, expand their grasp in understanding the intent of the rules and awareness of how rules should be interpreted will benefit from the contents of this book.
