Product Description

Product Description

This field guide to the trees of Southern Africa covers approximately 900 of the species found in the region. The trees are grouped into sections according to leaf shape, and each section is identified by a line drawing of the "leaf group". Each species is illustrated by photographs of the diagnostic tree parts, which may include flowers, fruit, bark, or a combination of these. Concise descriptions of each tree are written with an emphasis on identification and the authors provide additional information on medicinal and other uses of the tree parts where it may be of interest to the reader.

Hello fellow tree huggers, botanists and Field guides,

Over 1000 species of trees are descibed and illustrated mainly by full colour photos and black and white drawings in this paperback book.
536 pages take you through the sometimes complicated methods required to identify trees and various shrubs and succulents of Southern Africa.

Trees are listed by groups with individual family descriptions and species accounts. There is a very useful glossary of terms, various maps and individual maps of biomes of vegetation types and centres of both plant diversity and endemism.

There are three identification diagrams which the reader uses to find the right path to the correct species. This book is one of those books you could take a lifetime to read and absorb. It is a wealth of accumulated knowledge by the authors and is an excellent reference book to enhance the book collection of anyone interested in South African flora and fauna.

I purchased this book to assist me in passing my Field Guide of South Africa(F.G.A.S.A.) level 1 theory examination and had no problem in answering any of the tree questions in the independant and course exams.

There are useful snippets of information on the use of the wood fruit and leaves of some of the trees which is invaluable for retaining the interest of clients on a game drive when you are struggling to find game.

The photos are a mixture of shots from the wild and close ups in the studio and many show the leaves, bark, fruit and seed pods and sometimes even individual seed photos which can be very useful for anyone interested in propagion of any of the species depicted-I grow a few Bonsai trees so the seed photos come in very handy indeed.

If you are a Safari and or Field guide, a botanist, arboroculturalist, a bonsai grower or simply a tree hugger then this is the book for you, a little expensive but then as I always say-you get what you pay for and this book is (I think) excellent value for the money.

Well recommended! Keep the wind in your face and the sun on your back-Enjoy, Bwana Foster.
