Product Description

Product Description

South-East Asia is one of the richest parts of the world in terms of mammals, with species new to science still being described on a regular basis. The first comprehensive guide to the mammals of this region, "A Field Guide to the Mammals of South-East Asia" covers all the mammals recorded from mainland South-East Asia, from Myanmar through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia and south to Malaysia. A detailed account with key identification characteristics, habitat and behaviour is included for each species, from large mammals such as big cats, the elephant, rhinoceroses and cetaceans, through bears, langurs and badgers, to bats, flying-foxes and rodents. Detailed line drawings amplify details of anatomy and other aspects. Seventy-two magnificent specially commissioned colour plates by top wildlife artists show nearly 500 major species, and thumbnail maps give information on distribution.

About the Author

CHARLES FRANCIS works at the National Wildlife Research Centre of the Canadian Wildlife Service and is an expert on the mammals of the South-East Asia. He has travelled extensively in the region and is the author of New Holland's Photographic Guide to the Mammals of South-East Asia.

A chunky field guide 10 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
While it is an excellent book, it is a field guide that will tend to be left in the Hotel for reference when you return, it is just too chunky to carry with your bird guide etc etc.
The pictures are clear as are the maps. Could it have bean issued in two volumes, part 1 maps, pictures and discription, Jaws and other detailes in part 2?
But it is still an excellent book.

Good pocket guide 1 Oct 2009
By Di
Format:Paperback
We went to malaysia for 3 weeks and wanted to be able to identify any mammals we might see. This is a handy pocket sized book with good colour photos and accompanying text. We found it ideal.

Format:Hardcover
392 pages, hard cover, 24 x 16 x 3 cm and 1 kg weight is top limit for carrying around in the field though, in this case, worth the effort. 29 pages of introduction, 72 plates of excellent drawings with distribution and brief descriptions opposite. The main text is separate and unnecessarily repeats the brief descriptions. In it, 'Ecology and habitat' and 'Distribution and status' are inevitably repetetive between smaller species because relatively little is known and habitat loss is catastrophic.

Overall, an important contribution to environmental awareness and conservation in general, and an essential purchase for naturalists visiting the region.
