This pocket-sized field guide requires some knowledge of flowers to use, as it is arranged according to flower families and has no key. But the photographs are of excellent quality, and really help to distinguish even very similar members of the same family, such as orchids.

Given its size, the book wisely concentrates on the most conspicuous and widespread species, and does not waste space covering plants already familiar in northern Europe. The main countries covered are Spain, Italy, portugal and southern France. Species limited to Greece and the Balkans are not included, nor are the rarer alpines.

The text is full and informative, and is printed on the page facing the photographs - no time-wasting flicking backwards and forwards. In the margin are line drawings of any distinctive feature that might help with identification.

There is a glossary, an index, and a useful note on the most important areas of interest to flower-lovers. I only have one criticism: the spine binding is not strong enough. But apart from that, this is a most useful and well-organised book, well worth taking on any expedition and equally giving much pleasure to look through at home.

Clear photos and text with a great coverage of what you're likely to see - and it's all in a slim volume, not too big to slip into a pocket or daypack. Thoroughly recommended.

You would struggle to use this book to identify flowers. The photos are of varying quality, arranged as a patchwork and not numbered so you have to keep cross referencing with the text on the opposite page. Many of the species in Southern France are not included. The index doesn't include some of the common names which feature in the book, making it even more difficult to find them. I have carried this on so many walks and have wasted hours standing next to a flower and searching through the pages trying to find a matching photo.
