Product Description

Review

"The book captures the atmosphere of battles [and] depicts the battle environments around the world from the Italian Wars of the early 16th century through the conflicts of the standing armies at the end of the 17th century. It covers from the massed pike formation on the open battlefield, to the mixed formations of pike and shot, up to the adoption of the socket bayonet; which made the pikeman just about obsolete."
- www.mataka.org (November 2010)

"This is one of the rare cases where I feel a wargaming book was priced too low." -Chris Deboe, "Laserlight
"
."..offers a fine set of wargaming rules for Renaissance tabletop gaming and is designed to both teach principles and allow players to focus on battlefield tactics and deployments." - "The Midwest Book Review"

Muy bueno. 24 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Me ha gustado y me parece muy interesante. Creo que se adapta bien a la guerra en el renacimiento. Aunque puede parecer espeso, sobre todo las formaciones y movimientos, en el juego no es tan duro. Basta con jugar un par de partidas de muestra.

ECW wargames rules 18 April 2011
By Corvus
Format:Hardcover
A game primarily derived from a very popular ancients rules and feel like they are a 'reworking' with designers starting from the position of "how do we turn our ancient rules into a Renaissance set" rather than "how do we write a good set of Renaissance rules". These rules would allow you to recreate large set piece battles but not so well for smaller actions. Does not reflect the varying ratios of shot to pike that was a feature of the war. Good for fast play and balanced armies for the competition gamer. (Dare I say as Flames of War for WWII so Fields of Glory for the Renaissance.) Lots of internet support. Rules and army books beautifully illustrated and well presented. In a period where there is no overarchingly popular set of rules they will do well but I am unsure, as an anorak of the period, if they successfully get the feel of the period which in England were often small actions. I do not feel the standard size regiments are a positive but can see where the designer got the idea with small units bregaded together at set piece battles.

In summary I personally find them too generic a "system" to reflect the period and suitable only for set piece battles... BUT they are fun and will appeal to players of the ancient version. Not for the pureist or for those trying to recreate anything but the big obvious refights.

at last 27 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
At last a set ouf rules to cover this period of gaming. Obviously high production standards, but now at a reasonable price, make this worthy o fa try out.

many games later and the interactions between the different troop types / doctrines is beginning to be understood. Dont take these at first read value, they appeared to be the offspring of the ancients set with a similar lack of period feel.... instead, while using similar mechanisms, these provide a differnt gaming experience, much faster paced, much more fun, much less reliant upon sertain troop types. We played out way through the first two army list books.... not had a bad game yet!
