More About the Author

I originally trained as an engineer - which is rather unusual for a children's author - and spent many years working for companies making and using plastics, in England, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and, more recently, Spain. I used to make notes for stories when I was sitting in boring meetings, or travelling on trains and planes. Now we live in Kent and I'm trying to spend a lot more time writing. I started writing stories for my children, when they were small, but it was a long time before I had anything accepted for publication. They have now grown up and left home, so I've been working on my writing for a long, long time. The first things I had published were poems - you might come across some of them in poetry anthologies for children. Here's one of my favourites(just to fill up the page!):

A tyrannosaur in Tesco's came stomping down the aisle,
Searching for the dental floss and practising his smile.

Did the stegosaur in Sainsbury's want a trolley or a basket?
No one knew, and no one really had the nerve to ask it.

A megalosaur in M&S was trying something frilly,
But checking in the mirror just to see if she looked silly.

The dinosaurs, all loaded down with boxes, bags and bits,
Then jumped into a taxi to take coffee at The Ritz.

My first picture book, Under the Bed, was published in 2003. The second book, Quiet! was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Award - in the end it didn't win the award, but I did get a Blue Peter badge and was on the telly for about 5 seconds! I now have about 10 picture books published, with more on the way. I only write the words - if I drew the pictures nobody would buy them - but I get to work with some wonderful illustrators. You can find more details of my books and poems, together with a lot of fun activities, on my website www.paulbright.co.uk .

Happy Reading!

Paul Bright

5.0 out of 5 stars Feely fidgety fish 19 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This has been a huge hit for our 19 month old, he loves touching the fish on all the pages and chats away to them! Lovely and colourful, nice rhymes and great characters. We had it from the library so many times we thought we'd better buy it.

complete with glittery enhancements!

Vibrant, durable board covers open to 18 high quality pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Robust glittery enhancements add a textured dimension to the brilliant illustrations, and promote that eagerness to turn the page...as does the extra bonus of seeking out Fidgety Fish on the pages where he is less prominent!

From the back cover (and first page of the book):-

'I love to flap and fidget,
To dive and dart and dash.
I wiggle my bottom and jiggle my tail,
With a fidgety splish, splosh splash!....'

The text is capitalised for the featured character, e.g.:-

FIDGETY FISH
SMILEY SHARK
CLICKETY CRAB
PROUD PUFFERFISH
etc,

then follows the flowing rhyme, in an easy-to-read font.

Example of rhyme:-

'SUPER SEAHORSES
Can you see the seahorses? Can you spot a snout?
Can you find a tail, or a tummy sticking out?
Can you see the seahorse friends, all playing peek-a-boo?
Jumping out and laughing, shouting, "I've found you!"...'

Appropriate words are randomly featured, such as Swoosh!, Clickety-Click, Hello!.....giving that all important joining-in dimension.....especially with Boing!, WHOOSH!, and BOO!

A great book which has proved to be a firm favourite in the reading corner and has provided remarkable scope for extension work including replicating the delightful illustrations with felt tips, paints and glitter pens!

5.0 out of 5 stars Glittery fish 24 Feb 2011
By Parents in Touch TOP 500 REVIEWER

A glittery cover gives this book instant appeal and the lovely glittery pictures continue throughout the book - an unexpected surprise and children will be thrilled. Fidgety Fish swims his way through the pages as he meets all sorts of wondrous sea creatures, each with its own lovely rhyme - can your child spot him on each page? How many seahorses can they count? A beautifully presented book which is out of the ordinary, made so by the fabulous illustrations - really attractive and great fun too. Plenty to capture children's attention.
