Polly and the Billet Doux's debut album is a breath of fresh air. The album mixes numerous genres to an astonishing effect. Whether it's blues, bluegrass, country, or Jazz, this is an America album of great proportions.

Surprisingly, the band hail from Winchester, England, but they sound like they come out of Colorado, Texas or North Carolina.

Fiction, Half Truths and Downright Lies is the follow up to the band's first EP 'Head Full of Steam', and proves to be a significant progression. The new album evokes an acoustic charm that many other of today's new bands will find hard to emulate. The overall sound kind of reminds me of Fleet Foxes, the Cowboy Junkies and Emmylou Harris.

A must for any serious music enthusiast.

Polly and the Billets Doux are a four-piece English group who're trying to pull of that clever balancing act of mixing folk, Blues, country and a bit of soul. It's a laudable ambition and one that they come close to achieving on more than a few occasions. They've already put out a well received EP ("Head Of Steam" in 2007), but this is their full-length debut. Polly Perry takes care of vocals and double bass, Andrew Steen plays guitars, harmonica and vocals, Daniel Everett plays bass and sings, and Ben Perry hits the drums.

They are very keen on harmony vocals, but they come across as a wee bit ramshackle, although given the style of music they're purveying that may actually be deliberate. It's also just as well, as none of them are stand out singers. However, they have an enthusiasm and a zest that makes songs like 'Follow My Feet', 'Don't Trouble Trouble' and 'Lead Me On' a pleasure to listen to.

It's a very olde worlde sound, as they saunter through their hand-crafted songs, which wouldn't be out of place in an old black and white photograph. It's the kind of thing that should have been issued on wax cylinder rather than a CD, and although it won't be making many visits to the hi-fi, when it does, it will be warmly welcomed.

I really love this album, Polly's voice is so beautiful, feminine and strong. She goes from belting out to singing so softly and sweetly. After listening to the album I always get "The Rounder" stuck in my head for days ^_^
I would recommend this album, it's different, soulful and rocks! Cannot wait for more!
