I've literally just finished reading this excellent book. A brilliant adventure of a young vampire bat called Ffangs who wants to be human. Hughes brilliantly intertwines the characters lives, writing story lines which go off at a fantastical, imaginative tangent which then come flooding back to the oringinally story line of Ffangs. The story starts with the hilarious trials of Attila the cockerel. In Atilla's final trial he meets Ffang the Vampire who is desperately looking for someone to help him be human. Ffangs tales are funny, yet sad and thought provoking. Ffangs story then leads into the imaginary fairy tale story line of Squarg the Vampire Slayer trying to find the truth about his wife. Ted Hughes beautifully draws the story lines to a conclusion at the end and then leaves you dangling at the last moment! Can Ffang become human? Is Squarg's wife really a vampire? All will be revealed by the 'Kiss of Truth, or will it? 'Unputdownable'!

Five loosely-connected chapters set up various characters, from a feisty cock called Attila the Hen and Ffangs the reluctant vampire, to Thomas Squarg the Vampire Killer and his lovely wife Sweety Crisp.

If this makes it sound more interesting and delightful than it is, it's because the book doesn't develop any of these stories beyond promising introductions. In fact the whole book feels like a first draft where Hughes is just following his nose to see where the next word or notion takes him.

There's nothing wrong with this, of course, but the repetitive adventures (endless falling down holes and stairwells) and confusing shifts in location make the narrative sluggish and dull. When you throw in extraneous, unexplained characters who duplicate the roles of the main protagonists (for no reason there's another vampire who turns out to be a Holy Man who talks with eagles) the whole thing adds up to less than the sum of its parts.

It being Ted Hughes, there are some startling images and turns of phrase, but the whole thing feels like a careless spiral into fantasy. It gives nothing away to say that the kiss of truth in the title turns out to be a bite from a green snake (that was once a silver bullet) which crawled down a hole, grew enormous, flattened Chicago, shrank and lodged in the larynx of a pale girl called Selena. If this appeals to you then you might enjoy the book. If you are as bored by madcap invention as the author seems to be then you are unlikely to be satisfied by more than the excellent illustrations by Chris Riddell.

My seven-year old thought it was ok.

I bought this for my 5 year old grandson but on looking through it I think its probably meant for 7- 8 year olds as some of the stories and sketches are a bit scary - I have decided I will keep it and give to him at a much later date! Otherwise its a great scary book.
