Review

These images capture with remarkable sensitivity the essence of Feynman's character. The comic-book picture somehow comes to life and speaks with the voice of the real Feynman. --Freeman Dyson, "The New York Review of Books"

He has worked as a nuclear engineer and is currently employed as a reference librarian in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

LELAND MYRICK ("Feynman," "Missouri Boy") is the Ignatz Award- and Harvey Award-nominated author and illustrator of "The Sweet Collection" and "Bright Elegy." Feynman, a graphic novel written by Jim Ottaviani has the power to excite and educate the minds of interested youths and adults alike.
Jim Ottaviani has created an accessible text that does justice to the science and unique personality of Richard P. Feynman (1918 - 1988). The art by Leland Myrick skillfully conveys in a visual format many hard notions of quantum mechanics and portrays the many giants of modern physics who crossed the path of Feynman, and the colouring by Hilary Sycamore in this stunning graphic novel is at times vivid, always varied and often employs soft hues. Feynman, a book suitable for Junior High or High School students, serves as a fabulous primer for quantum mechanics and QED. Ottaviani, to my mind, has wisely left the more salacious adulterous elements out of the text, to make the book child-friendly, a highly worthy goal. The interested adult may find a full treatment of this very human but less palatable aspect of Feynman's life in Genius by James Gleick.
This fine and rewarding book on Feynman deserves to be in every Junior High Science or High School Physics class room and in the home of any parent who wants to instill in their teenager a love of science, as the father of Richard P. Feynman did with such notable results.

Format: Hardcover
This graphic-biography of QED's great populariser is a wonderfully frantic crash-course of Feynman's life. Flitting from scene to scene and anecdote to anecdote whilst still maintaining some sort of linear timeline, exposes the reader to the wealth of humour, intelligence, and wisdom that Feynman exuded throughout his life. The graphic novel format lends the biography an incredibly approachable nature, allowing the narrator's (Feynman's) flights of fancy come vividly alive. Furthermore, an excellent further reading section towards the back of the novel gives Feynman rookies an excellent distillation of the wealth of literature surrounding the extraordinary man.

One thing that did disappoint me is that there was rather little of any actual science - it seems a little peripheral and rushed. However, I can imagine that another complete graphic novel (or library) could be devoted to QED - and what is included is explained to a high enough standard to grab and sustain the reader's interest.

Bought this as a gift for my other half who is a big Feynman fan, then ended up grabbing it to read myself. It really gets across Feynman's larger-than-life personality and charisma, and takes an empathic look at the tragic aspects of his life as well. I love the way the images and text work together. While I mostly read conventional fiction (ie just words) I'm starting to appreciate - through books like this - the power of characterful drawings to convey moods or feelings without words. Very impressive. My OH's favourite scene is the one where Feynman's friends help him finish a piece of work by literally locking him in a room and passing food under the door until it's done. We could all do with friends like those at times...

I bought this book as a present for Christmas and I know it'll be appreciated, the level of physics will please any physics student (its for a physics student), yet it is still readable by anyone who only has the very basics grasps of physics. It is a stunning autobiography with amazing graphics, pretty much every page being in full colour.

RECOMMEND.
Well worth the money.

I enjoyed this - the relatively highbrow modern style of graphic novels to tackle serious subjects is good. Having read Feynman's own autobiographies it was interesting to contrast his own perspective on his life, with this simplified and very readable perspective. A jolly good read.
