Undead Calm, 21 Dec 2009
This review is from: The Ferryman [DVD] (DVD)
Two couples, Kathy and Zane, and Chris and Tate sign up for an adventure holiday on the yacht 'The Dionysus', run by another couple Big Dave and Suze. They do the usual routine of bickering, falling in and out of love and drinking, but their first big mistake is not turning back to shore when a shark they catch has a human hand inside it. Their second, and far worse mistake is answering a distress call, and picking up crusty old sea dog 'The Greek' from a boat cast adrift. All is fine until Chris puts some money down as a wager in a game of cards, then the man they rescued starts fitting, spewing up blood, and soon after events take a horrifying, murderous turn for the worse as 'The Greek' whips out his magic dagger and stabs Zane. Understandably annoyed, Big Dave throws the assailant overboard, but all is not well as soon Zane starts acting very strangly indeed, and no one is safe on board The Dionysus.
This UK/New Zealand co-production was a pleasant suprise. It didnt start off too well, as some of the characters were a bit annoying, and the film meandered a bit, but once they rescue the mysterious Greek(an excellent performance from John Rhys Davies), things improve considerably, and the film develops an interesting supernatural bent. This is helped no end by the great atmosphere that is created when the ship is trapped in a fog bank, and some enjoyable set pieces involving magic daggers and demonic possessions. The acting is generally excellent from an experienced cast including Tamer Hussain and Kerry Fox, although there are a few cases of hideous over acting when the characters are possessed. All in all, an enjoyable slice of supernatural hokum, and something a little diffrent from the norm. Nice extras on the DVD as well. 4 out of 5

The story is soso the characters, well, you couldn't care less about not even the hot nurse Kathy..and she is pretty fit. The only one I felt sorry for was the dog! Really disgusting scene involving animal cruelty in this film and then we have to see it whimpering in pain before being thrown overboard?! who wants to see something like that I hope it wasnt suffering for real. garbage film, watch ghostship instead for something half decent horror on a boat.

Low budget shocker but with some tension and atmosphere which make it less forgettable than many and, therefore, probably worth a look.
