Product Description

Product Description

The problem with most generalized Buyer's Guides is their lack of detail. In an attempt to cover every model that was ever constructed, much of the necessary data has to be omitted. While these books make interesting reading, the potential buyer that has already determined which model he or she wants to purchase, will be sorely disappointed with the woefully inadequate information they contain. Not so with this book! More than just a Buyer's Guide, it's a complete guide to the purchase and ownership of a 308 series Ferrari and includes a wealth of data for the owner once the car has been purchased. Consisting of three major sections, the first section helps the reader understand the history of Ferrari and the introduction and development of the 308 series cars. The second section will help you decide how, what, when and where to purchase and the third section will assist you in keeping your new acquisition in top condition with hints and tips on maintenance, repair and even modification. If you already own a 308, then this book will help you get the most enjoyment from your ownership and will prepare you for what potential buyers will be looking for when it comes time to sell. A well-written book by a respected authority on late model Ferraris and no 308 enthusiast should be without a copy.

this is a book that could be about the purchase of any car. As such we get told a lot of obvious things, like, "don't buy the first thing you see" and "do your research" etc etc. which of course is what i thought the book would help me do.
Also, it constantly reminds the reader that a Ferrari is no ordinary car and that you will be buying into some glorious, mysterious world. A few facts and figures are thrown in to support that augument.
Well, thats all well and good, but when I bought this book, I was in the process of buying my first 308 and found that it told me nothing that couldn't be worked out with a bit of thought. For instance, I couldn't really see the need for four pages on how to clean the car.

having said all that, there are some usefull bits of info and contacts in there for the complete begineer. This book should be bought with a few others such as 'Original Ferrari V8' to get a rounded view.

No book will either convince you to buy or not buy a Ferrari. Only your wife can do that. I divorced mine, and guess what's in my garage.

Acclaim for Cook's 308 guide 14 Sep 2007
By Richard Lindsay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Just received Cook's Ferrari 308 guide and enjoyed every moment of it! In fact, I was late to work this morning because I stayed up late finishing it last night. I've owned, restored and enjoyed a 1979 308GTB for ten years but still learned things from Steve's book. I found the work to be well written with topics divided into a logical progression from a history of the marque to tips and hints for the new (or seasoned) owner. I must admit that I did not read the book sequentially from start to end but rather, by picking and choosing chapters. Being a long-time 308 owner I started with the owner's guide chapter - and picked up a few new useful tips! I then started at the beginning and read everything else. The history of Ferrari from 1947 to present is well written and while interesting in detail, it is not overloaded with fluffy trivia. Steve's passion for the marque is contagious. In fact, I plan to get my 308 out this weekend and share some it's soul with mine. Well done, Mr. Cook!

Great Intro to the 308 8 Mar 2008
By H. Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this book extremely helpful when I started my search for a 308. Like the title says, it's a buyer's guide and helped me a lot in that area. It's also helped me get to know my new car better too.

I did see the error in the table one of the other reviewers saw, but its correct in the text.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering a 308, or anyone wanting more information about their Ferrari. It's an excellent introduction to "the red fever".

Sorry, but I'm unimpressed 6 Nov 2007
By D. Meredith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a long time 308 owner, I always keep my eyes open for new 308 material. So I automatically bought this one pretty much without a second thought.

There's very little here which is not already readily available in better books. No pictures, save for an occasional B&W picture of what I am assuming must be the author's own QV. There's a section on the general history of Ferrari which is of little relevence for a 308 Buyer's Guide - if this is your interest, there's much better places to research the history of the marque.

The centerpiece of the book appears to be a blank Pre-Purchase Inspection form which you are encouraged to photocopy and use when looking at a new 308. The PPI form is pretty generic in nature, not tuned to a 308 in my view, and blank inspection forms like this are (again) available in lots of other places.

There's a smattering of errors in the text, too. One which I specifically recall claims that the TRX wheels take conventional 15" tires!

All in all, sadly not worth the money that I paid. Mine is for sale at a used book place in an attempt to salvage some of my $30.00 back.
