This is a great investment if you love hiking outdoors even during nighttime.
I ordered it this summer and it was delivered within less than a week, and I have been using it mostly outdoors, set on high, which means 335 Lumen, and it does last up to 7 hours, as described. I sometimes vary with the lower, 108 lumen setting (the mid setting), and it still gives you a steady and powerful beam of light.

Unluckily enough I managed to drop it at one point, even though I was not aiming at testing its durability this way, but ...the lucky thing is that it didn't break, the led was intact and nothing shattered. It is still as good as new.

I recommend it, since it is easy to use, can be loaded with AA batteries (I recommend rechargeable ones, to spare you the expenses) and it is a reliable source of light.

Fenix created a perfect design for its intended use 11 Feb 2011
By atomic240 - Published on Amazon.com
Fenix knocked it out of the park on this one. I was specifically looking for an outdoor light with good throw, plastic handle (metal gets too cold in winter), not so much knurling on the handle to rub your hand raw, flexible modes which are easy to change. It delivers. Other reviews indicate lack of understanding of the use of the light. They complain of it being "too big". Not sure I understand that one. The LD 25 is similar, but is a less powerful Fenix 2 AA light, so if "big" is a concern, that may be the better Fenix light to pick. Frankly, too much knurling is irritating. I see no problems with gripping this flashlight as it is designed. It has modest knurling sufficient to the task. The plastic handle with aluminum head was a brilliant design which allows for a very bright light yet comfortable to hold when cold outside. Build quality is excellent, and should last a long time. Could you drive a truck over it and have it continue working? Probably not, but that is beyond the level of abuse most people would dish out. It is also not a dive light. But it will survive rain and drops into shallow water just fine. Brightness will usually appear less with a neutral color lisht compared to a cool colored light, but in reality is quite a bit more functional for outdoor use since color patterns are not altered significantly with a neutral colored beam, which can penetrate foliage better than cool colored lisht as one reviewer noted. The switch design was very clever, as one switch turns it on, and the other quickly and easily moves through the modes. It also quite conveniently turns on in the previous mode used. This is one of the simplest to operate Fenix lights in this respect, and I have had quite a few of them, and 4 sevens lights as well. Run times are more than adequate, 245 hours at 4 lumens (which is actually useable in dark settings) to 3 hours and 13 minutes at 248 lumens which in real use is as bright as most people would need for an outdoor light. If you are looking for high quality good outdoor light for camping, caving, hiking, and the like, this will serve you well. If you are looking for a tactical light cannon strictly for tactical use, there may be better choices from Fenix and numerous others, but there are very few high quality designs specifically for the purpose of being used in an outdoor setting. I have looked for years for one, and this one is it. 5 stars easy.

4 AA flashlight 9 Oct 2010
By Mr. David P. Bomar - Published on Amazon.com
I have a Fenix LD20 R4 which I thought was fantastic after years of Mag-Light ownership - that LD20 R4 will light up things very well, but now that I got an LD40 - WOW - much brighter and you can see much farther and clearer as well, especially good for outside viewing with it's 'neutral white light' - you can actually see INTO trees and brush - not just light up the outside of it. Lens is 2 times as big as the LD20 R4 so it can still fit in your loose pants pockets but it does weigh more and is bigger.
But if you need or want a really good light this one is an excellent choice. Get some 2500 or 2600 mah rechargeable AA batteries and go light up your night in a really impressive way, all from a little 4XAA pocket flashlight. It does need something applied to the plastic grip to make it easier to 'grip' and you can't dive with it - limit 2m waterproof depth. It also has multiple modes which can truly make it a real life saver in several different scenario's from tactical blinding to low light longevity to SOS and beacon modes. It's a really cool light. Lot of punch in a small package.

nice 4 aa light 27 Dec 2010

I bought this light as a gift but have played with it extensively. I have a fenix l2d that i use on a daily basis that i love, so i was excited to get to try the ld40. The first thing i noticed was it was much bigger than the l2d and felt "fuller" in my hand. The 2x2 configuration and the oblong shaped handle make the ld40 more comfortable than it would have been if it was round. The body is a high tech plastic. This may concern those looking for a rugged light, but after handling it, I wouldn't be scared to put this light through hard use. The ld40 produces a warm colored light and throws well with ample sidespill for most uses.

One critique I have for the ld40 is the sheath it comes in. It is made from good material and has both a fixed belt strap and a hook and loop fastener for quick attachment. The flashlight goes in the holster bottom first with the head out of the main holster body. Then there is a velcro strap that wraps around over the head and secures on the body of the holster. While I was wearing the light in holster, the light would tilt the head to the side of the holster. In most cases I dont think this would be a problem, but if i was doing high activity level tasks, such as sprinting or jumping fences, I dont think I would trust the light to stay in the holster. The light does come with a very nice lanyard that you could attach to the velcro part of holster incase it did come out though.

I chose this light to keep around the house because it uses aa batteries, has good throw, is waterproof, and shock resistant. After using this product I feel I made a good choice and would recommend this to others for similar use.
