5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Feng Shui Book I've Ever Read 20 May 2012
By ChrisF
I've read many feng shui books. All of them had something to offer, but none of them were written as clearly and concisely as this one. Being Chinese, I have heard the superstitions all my life that are supposed to be part of feng shui. In fact, those very superstitions are an aspect of feng shui I have always been uncomfortable with because many of them seemed so ridiculous. After reading this book I feel that the author has brought dignity back to feng shui by doing an incredible job of researching and explaining the common sense original intentions of many feng shui traditions that have been lost or convoluted over time. Ms.McCandless's approach to the subject of feng shui is clear and informative, and her respect, experience, and passion for the system of feng shui and its cultural context is apparent throughout the book. I especially appreciate her desire to return feng shui principles to their original meanings and I feel that the book did this quite well.
There are so many great ideas in this book for improving the look and feel of your home. I have used some of the techniques from the book in my living room and can't believe how much better the room looks and feels. I'm really looking forward to continuing this process through the rest of my house. Along with all the great tips, techniques, and information presented in the book, I also enjoyed reading the stories about some of the author's personal experiences with clients. A couple of the stories were so funny they made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed this book so much that I've given it to many of my friends and family for gifts, and with Christmas coming up, I plan to give even more of them. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn sound, practical feng shui information that they can easily apply to their own home.

Having studied feng shui I was quite eager to read this book as the description sounded ideal to help me identify the negative connotations western people have with feng shui and to determine my strategy of how to overcome these objections.

The book started off ok, if a little wacky but soon descended into the completely ridiculous ramblings of a person without the faintest clue on how feng shui works or even the underlying principles coupled with an unusual fear of electrical appliances.

There is virtually no true feng shui at all in the book, basic principles are completely ignored or just plain wrong. The author does not seem to have a grasp on the actual concepts of feng shui, instead using purely her own design tastes and principles she proudly declares anything she personally likes as "good feng shui" and everything she doesn't "bad feng shui".

When trying to dispel the "myths" she has no insight of the true history and implementation of feng shui and instead spouts her own interpretations and ideas which have absolutely nothing to do with the reality of the evolution or workings of the subject.

If, like the author, you honestly believe that clearing out a closet will cure heart disease (yes, she did actually make this claim - kindle loc 1870) perhaps we should contact the scientific community immediately and tell them to stop researching medical cures as their work is no longer needed! Otherwise if you would like to learn about practical implementation of feng shui I recommend any of the books written by Eva Wong a genuine feng shui consultant from an incredible lineage of feng shui masters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky off the wall read 18 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hearing about Feng Shui from a relative I decided to purchase this book out of curiosity. It's not bad read and I think I will take some of the author's point on board. Not sure about not using cactus and bonsai in you home, but it does have some practical sense. Have a read with an open mind though...

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Informative! 25 May 2012
By KarenW.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to say that with a library full of feng shui books, I was skeptical that there could be anything new and different regarding feng shui. So many of my books repeated and repeated the same information and a lot of that information sounded silly and superstitious. I heard about this book from my friend in the U.S. (where it has received amazing reviews and great success) and decided to purchase the Kindle version. I know another reviewer had a challenge with the Kindle version a few months ago, but mine was flawless, so the formatting issues she mentioned must have been solved.
This book is quite simply the very best book on feng shui I've ever read. It is very well-written, with clear, concise explanations on how to use feng shui in your home. It also clarifies the myths and silly superstitions that have been mistakenly made part of feng shui. This book was such a breath of fresh air, especially after reading so many other feng shui books that really just seemed to repeat the same information and nonsense over and over. This author has done the research and has taken the time to find out the true meanings behind feng shui principles, and I am grateful for all I learned when reading the book. I've employed what I've been reading in my own home and it feels so good now that friends notice that something is different in the relaxed way my home now feels and it is all due to this book.
If you are interested in a great, easy to use book about feng shui, this is the book for you. It is now my "go to" feng shui book and I have recommended it to all my friends and family. It also makes a great house warming or wedding gift. I really think this book is going to change (for the better) the way the world understands the beautiful system of feng shui. I highly recommend it!!
