Lots of great information and tidbits I didn't know... 22 Mar 2011
By Cindy Brock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have been practicing Feng Shui since 1992 (when I read a single page article in a magazine). I have studied both traditional Compass and Black Hat. This book uses Black Hat - which I find is far simpler and with which I have had great results.

There are some EXCELLENT tips in this book that I had never heard before. For example...

(1) Putting a mirror above your toilet. Had no clue to do this and/or why.
(2) Chapter 22 about empowerment. One of my favorite chapters and a "must read" section.
(3) Working with your lot and landscape. I knew your lot had some involvement: this contains new information.
(4) Skylights and why/how to use crystals in them. (I have 7 skylights in my home - built in the mid-1970's.)
(5) Not seeing the toilet when you enter a bathroom. I think almost every home as this issue. While it's not feasible for me to change the doors on my 4 bathrooms, I'm going to follow the suggestion of the spring hinges. (I have no kids but I can see the cats rushing in behind me and then getting stuck when I leave the bathroom! LOL)

As with all "Dummies" books, there is just right the combination of text and images. It's easy to read the author makes the concepts simple. I like the way you can somewhat jump around in this book and pick out cures (aka solutions) that are relevant to what you need. For example, if you find that more money seems to be going out then coming in, check all the drains in your house and make sure they are covered. This includes bathroom sink, bathtub/shower drains, etc. Most importantly: keep the toilet lid closed.

I really do recommend this book to anyone who wants to or has dabbled in Feng Shui. My best advice: pick one area of your house to start on, read about it, and then grow from there.

Thorough, but let's be realistic 23 Sep 2011
By Bette - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've read several books on the subject of feng shui, from the 90's on. This is more thorough than most, handling everything from basic tenets (chi, ying/yang) to layout, tools, cures, elements, indoor and outdoor planning to more advanced ideas such as how to buy your future home with feng shui in mind.

The problem with so much feng shui is that getting things "right" might require actual remodeling of your home. This is, of course, a costly burden, which is why any good book on the subject will give you alternatives to knocking down walls and moving entryways and major appliances (such as objects representing the elements; chimes, water features, plants, etc). Of course, if it is doable, re-positioning your bed might be a good idea. The book also addresses your office, desk positioning, etc. Also included is information for apartment dwellers, who have very limited allowances for altering their spaces.

This is a pretty exhaustive treatment on the subject. If you really want to take feng shui seriously, and make whatever adjustments you can to create more harmony in your home, it is a recommended buy, as you will refer to it for years to come.

Make this the first Feng Shui book you read 4 Oct 2011
By Linmayu Raye - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I received this book as a wedding present in 2002. Since then, it's been my main reference and I've used the principles of Feng Shui to engineer three career promotions, a move from an apartment to a house, improved business conditions at one of the companies I worked for, and a move into a better relationship after the marriage fell apart.

The authors have explained the art of Feng Shui excellently in layman's terms, making it entertaining to read and, most importantly, not ignoring common sense (a section on Feng Shui for career success reminds the reader that a perfectly Feng Shui'ed house will not do the job unless you actually get off the couch and look for jobs).

Some people will tell you that the method of Feng Shui presented in this book is "dumbed down," "Westernized," or "fake," however, all of the actual positive results I've achieved from Feng Shui came from learning and applying this method rather than the more complex method detailed in The Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui (which is still worth reading and studying, as you can gain many additional insights from it).
