6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Glasgow Fencing Newbie on 8 Jan. 2013
After reading the other two reviews of this product (what is this, I don't even...) I visited a High Street seller for a look. I then came straight home and bought it.

Although thin on pages - under 60 of actual information - this book is a very good introduction to the sport in a concise and entertaining little edition. It uses all of the proper terminology without putting them in big, bold condescending letters like they would do for children. There are many, full colour photos of Fencers in action to inspire you and as many, if not more, full colour instructional photo sequences as well.
The book is divided well, the short length again being a problem, and touches on every aspect of Fencing that you would want before stepping into your first lesson. Of course, there's nothing that beats actual Instruction, but you know what I mean.

There's nothing new here for experienced Fencers, but for the Newbie I'd say it was indispensable. My only gripe is that the instructional 'technique' photos would benefit from floor markers so it was evident where the Fencer began the move and ended up, but that's just me being a pedant really! Yes, it could be longer, but that would detract from the short, sharp way the book is presented. It's not a history textbook after all.

Written with the blessing of British Fencing (the governing body in the UK), I think new fencers will benefit from this book. I certainly have.

Great book for any one starting or interested in knowing the rudiments but a little book you can always refer to for the vocab and to refresh your understanding of the game. It will not replace practice though.
