Product Description

Product Description

Femtocells may well change the shape and operation of mobile networks over the next few years. These compact devices (the size of a paperback book) combine the functionality of a 3G mobile cellsite, broadband DSL modem and WiFi hotspot all in one. These products are forecast to be commercially available from over 20 networks before the end of 2010. As with mobile phones, they must be sold in conjunction with a mobile phone operator because they use licenced spectrum. Initially, they are likely to be subsidised as part of a package deal. This book explains the technology, describes the key vendors, suggests likely business models and provides insights into this exciting new development of mobile networks.

From the Publisher

The first book exclusively to cover the topic of femtocells.

Written by a leading independent authority on the topic, the book leads a path through functionality, standards, technical issues, equipment vendors and then explores the commercial business case.

Analysts forecast that femtocell product revenues will exceed 3 billion dollars by 2013, with somewhere between 40 and 100 million units sold.

This book is ideal for those needing to keep up to speed with current fast moving developments in the mobile telecommunications industry. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

it is an introduction to the femtocell tecnology, i was expecting more advanced information, but its ok. One thing i did not like is that the book is not well pasted so by the second day some pages were loose.

Had an opportunity to read this out of interest of mobile technology.
The subject is comprehensively covered and explained in breadth and depth, revealing the history, current state of the art and possible future direction for developments.
Technical detail is handled well with explanation of terms and components, supported by diagrams and a useful glossary.
A significant section of the book provides a reference to the key market players and influencers with further useful links and references to manufacturers web sites.
For a book which is clearly technical, by subject and nature, the style is refreshing and pallatable.

This is a great introduction to Femtocells and covers the subject very well. Also it raises a lot of challenges to both manufacturers and operators on how to position and develop the selling proposition for end users. It is a thought provoking book which is an excellent snap shot of the market today, with a great insight into the potential developments and hurdles femtocells will face following the imminent product commercial launches around the world.
