Book Description

28 Dec 2007 0231140398 978-0231140393
In Beyond Animal Rights, Josephine Donovan and Carol J. Adams introduced feminist "ethic of care" theory into philosophical discussions of the treatment of animals. In this new volume, seven essays from Beyond Animal Rights are joined by nine new articles-most of which were written in response to that book-and a new introduction that situates feminist animal care theory within feminist theory and the larger debate over animal rights. Contributors critique theorists' reliance on natural rights doctrine and utilitarianism, which, they suggest, have a masculine bias. They argue for ethical attentiveness and sympathy in our relationships with animals and propose a link between the continuing subjugation of women and the human domination of nature. Beginning with the earliest articulation of the idea in the mid-1980s and continuing to the theory's most recent revisions, this volume presents the most complete portrait of the evolution of the feminist-care tradition.

Review

At the center of feminist inquiry, forcing us to face hard and interesting questions. Women's Review of Books Vol 26 No 1 This book is dubbed a reader and is without peer in that capacity. Serious students in (feminist) animal ethics should read it closely. -- David Sztybel Journal of Animal Ethics Vol 1, No 2, 2011

I borrowed this book from my university library when I was writing my thesis and found it so compelling that I ordered a copy for myself. This is a strong, uncompromising reflection of the animal-rights/animal-ethics debate (although no debate per say, this is solely a "pro-animals" collection) which gets to the heart of the matter; that we ought to move beyond the ontology of 'rights' in the discourse concerning animals. Animals in our care are not 'equal' to humans, and this collection of essays promotes an ethic that recognizes this fact, where the care-giver has more power than the cared-for.

The focus on rights for autonomous human moral agents is problematic when considering rights for other animals as they will never be fully autonomous in that sense, as would, say, a fully functional and privileged human being. Regardless, a new ethical imperative is presented in this work which evokes feelings of outrage, compassion and a loathing for tyranny.

This is a passionate collection of essays, one that promotes an ethic of care that includes animals and rejects the hierarchical view of the world. Some essays are more powerful than others but most are convincing and well researched. It's a recommended read for anyone, whichever conclusions they might draw.
