5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and thought provoking read, 2 Oct 2002
By Miss L D McFaul (St Aubin, Jersey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Although this book is classed as an 'academic' book, it is aimed at a wide range of readers. Not only for students, doctors, psychologists, social workers, who would no doubt find this essential reading into the insight of this particular area, but to the layman and of course any woman who has ever suffered at the hands of an abuser. I like the fact that this book focuses on the women as being 'survivors' and not 'victims' and the fact that it is written in the first person makes it somewhat different from the average text book, which can often feel very impersonal.
The book covers a range of aspects from media reporting and the perception, good and bad, of female sexual abuse in the tabloid newspapers to statistics and prevalence in different parts of the world. What also makes this book so comprehensible and interesting are the case studies of three women and their individual stories. I would highly recommend this fantastically well written book to anyone, professional or non, who would be interested to learn more about this particular field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Female survivors applauded, 21 May 2003
By A Customer
The combination of academic rigour and the sensitively portrayed survivors in the case studies, written in such a wonderfully readable style, is captivating.

At last we can begin to understand the true horror of what is going on around us as we read this book in the year 2003. Christine Baker's book is compelling reading.I commend anyone reading this review to read her book. The case studies are harrowing at times but present a tremendous insight into what it is like to be sexually abused as a child and the effects this has on individuals' lives.
However Christine Bakers work with these individuals shows how, with assistance, the abused have worked hard, survived and gone on to live fulfilled lives. For some this came late on in their lives. Those reading this book, who have been suffering in silence, should take comfort that help is available now which could change their lives for the better.
