Product Description

Description
When Goldfrapp's debut, FELT MOUNTAIN, appeared in 2000, noone was quite sure how to categorize the music, but that didn't stop fans and critics alike from gushing about it. A collaboration between singer-keyboardist-songwriter Allison Goldfrapp and composer/producer Will Gregory, Goldfrapp is rooted in the heavy-lidded, ambient soundscapes of trip-hop, yet exhibits an equal interest in various other styles rangingfrom jazz to cabaret to film music.
On FELT MOUNTAIN, Goldfrapp sometimes sounds trapped in an Ennio Morricone-styled tableau: all whistling and spooky wind-swept vistas. Elsewhere, the duo exudes the cool, tongue-in-cheek attitude of aNancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood project. Yet Goldfrapp are more than just postmodern tricksters: their songs are substantive, and their productions and electronica-charged arrangements are never less than outstanding. This is the first (and will likely remain one of the best) offerings from this impressively inventive duo.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've just been to Felt Mountain!, 5 Dec 2001

This is an incredible album!
For months I have seen it in the shops and ignored it - the cover reeked of 'rock/indie' to me, and thats not my bag baby!

But a friend of mine brought it round for me to hear recently and I was blown away! This is a chillout album to beat all others! Very much like an English 'Air', but with more lyrical substance! Standout tracks for me, 'Utopia', 'Lovely Head' and best of all, 'Pilots'.

And with the bonus cd - this is an absolute must have.

Try catch them live too...you will not believe what Alison can do with her voice! What you think is an instrument on the cd, is her voice often enough!

I cant wait for new material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately not a Rock Climb, 22 Nov 2001
By A Customer
A lyrical treat. The voice of Alison Goldfrapp soars over the album. The arrangements are delicate and never overstated (Paper Bag) and it isn't very often you hear a harpsichord in current pop music. The perfect accompaniment to a Sunday Morning or late night. The pinacle of the album is the title track and the only nadir: the cod-fairground irritation of "Oompa Radar". They are also mesmorising live where you will get to hear their version of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" (the ablum version does not do it justice).
All that glitters is Goldfrapp - add to your shopping cart immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really interesting stuff!, 21 Feb 2005

Forgive me. I'd heard about Goldfrapp a bit over the last few years but somehow had never checked them out properly. I knew that 'Lovely Head' was featured on this album as I'd heard it a good few times on Monkey Dust, the surreal animated series on BBC3 (and sometimes BBC2).

I read a review somewhere about their second album, 'Black Cherry', and it reflected on this album as "John Barry influenced". I'd say definitely! The brass belches, the silky string lines, the quirky harpsichord patterns, the sometimes jazzy percussion and Alison's voice bring to mind a soundtrack to a Bond film that was never made or maybe some episodes of The Persuaders.

Highlights are many: 'Lovely Head', 'Paper Bag' (for its dreamy quality) and even 'Pilots' which borrows the melody from The Human League's 'Hard Times' (b-side to 'Love Action', fact fans!). 'Oompa Radar' is odd but how many times do you hear modern tracks in waltz time anyway?!).

This album is totally different to almost anything else. Her voice climbs inside your head and the effect is...well find out for yourself by buying a copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first into to GF...
Alison has a great voice and they are both good writers;
The only bad thing is that the DVCVD will play only on Mac OS 9 (or Classic-which are both now long gone.)
