Product Description

Prison drama starring Stephen Dorff as Wade Porter, a loving family man who is sentenced to three years in a maximum security prison after accidentally killing the burglar who broke into his home. Forced to share a cell with a mass murderer (Val Kilmer) and subjected to regular beatings by the corrupt head prison guard, Lt. Jackson (Harold Perrineau), Wade realises that he must toughen up in order to survive.

Synopsis

After the system fails Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff), a man who inadvertently killed an intruder in his home while justly protecting his wife and son, the family man faces three years in a maximum security prison where every rule he has ever lived by is thrown out the window. To make matters worse, Porter doesn't get along with his new cellmate (Val Kilmer), most likely because the guy is an epically notorious mass murderer. In order to make it out of his sentence alive, between vicious prisoners and the sadistic machinations of the corrupt Warden Lt. Jackson (Harold Perrineau, Lost), Porter has to transform himself into the toughest, meanest cat in the joint. This gritty actioner comes from writer-director Ric Roman Waugh, a popular stuntman who has worked on such films as Universal Soldier, Road House, Total Recall and Lethal Weapon 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't end up in a US prison 27 Dec 2011
By Mikey TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Well, try not to end up in ANY prison! This film depicts the events that could occur from one unlucky situation happening in the middle of the night. Stephen Dorff plays construction business owner Wade Porter who seems to have a decent future ahead. He's just been approved for a loan for his business, his wife and young son are happy at home. One night a burglar is discovered in the room of Porter's son. This leads to confrontation between the burglar and Porter resulting in the death of the burglar. Porter is then sentenced to three years imprisonment and the nightmare begins.

Val Kilmer also stars in this film and plays mass murderer John Smith. Nate Parker provides a fine performance in his role as Officer James Collins, questioning the ethics of Lieutenant Jackson played by Harold Perrineau.

The harsh realities of life in a US jail are on display here. I didn't really like the ending as it seemed too convenient and I feel unrealistic.

A fine film on the whole, worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars "You're an island now in a sea of sharks" 10 Feb 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Construction business owner Wade Porter(Stephen Dorff)accidentally kills a home intruder and is sentenced to three years in a maximum security prison. There he is cellmates with notorious mass killer John Smith(Val Kilmer)all the while trying to stay under the radar and out of the clutches of sadistic head guard Jackson(Harold Perrinau).
Uncompromising but riveting and brilliantly shaded prison drama is head and shoulders the best release from Sony's Fight Factory Series.Dorff is terrific as is Kilmer and with a supporting cast numbering Sam Shepard,Anne Archer and crucially Marisol Nichols as Porter's partner, writer and director Waugh's pungent, beautifully layered script is given it's full justice.Felon makes Oz look like a cartoon as it plays out it's hand of being a subtle indictment of the U.S penal system,a detailed character piece and a brutal actioner with some skill.
Remarkably cliche free, it can be excused going a little crowd pleasing in the final act because Felon is both superb entertainment and a thoughtful examination of how somebody's humanity and resolve can be severely tested after making one mistake in a largely good life and the consequences that are meted out by a system that only cares about the system.
A knockout of a film and deserves to be better known.
The one extra is a short docu which shows just how far Waugh was prepared to go to make Felon as realistic as possible.
