Biography

It’s been suggested—by fans, detractors, even by the band’s founder—that Shearwater and whatever we call underground/indie/whatever-rock in this part of the century are not an obvious fit. And that’s true. So much of what we hear these days (the lousy stuff, anyway) is willfully insular; Jonathan Meiburg’s songs, by contrast, have constantly tackled bigger ... Format: Audio CD
Covers album often have a "stop-gap" vibe to them no matter how good the source material. In the case of Shearwater it seems that the bands inspirational leader Jonathan Meiburg has sought a twist on the old concept by producing a set of reinventions and collaborations with bands they've toured with over the past decade. Full marks then for the concept but what about the music? As ever Meiburg's voice throughout the album is a thing of wonder. Shearwater often have the label "operatic" attached to their music because of his shimmering tenor and an ability to gloriously hit the vocal heights with unique interpretative passion. The album is economical at around 30 minutes and does contain one original song namely the duet with the wonderful Sharon Van Etten "A Wake For The Minotaur." Unsurprisingly it is one of the strongest on this short album not least since it bear the hallmarks of classic Shearwater with a delicate Meiburg vocal over slow acoustics, and combined with Van Etten's dulcet tones it is a rare beauty. We also have Shearwater covering Coldplay which might seem an unlikely pairing but the version of one of their lesser known songs "Hurts like Heaven" is very well done. Despite appearances to the contrary Meiburg has never worried about tackling hard rock and the song most heavily promoted from "Fellow Travellers" has been the cover of Xiu Xiu's "I love the Valley Girl OH!!". That bands frontman frontman Jamie Stewart and Meiburg have teamed up to form a new band called Blue Water White Death and while "Valley Girl" is not an outright triumph it grows considerably on repeated listens.

There are a couple of misfires.

Fellow travelers - 3.5 stars 21 Jan 2014

Anything that has Jonathan Meiburg's voice on it instantly deserves to be listened to. All of these songs are better than their original versions for that reason alone as far as I'm concerned. But I must warn you this is a terrible entry point for Shearwater, being that they have just released a streak of 4 masterpieces: Palo Santo, Rook, the Golden Archipelago and Animal Joy. Go for any of those first and get the real feel of this unique sounding and fabulous band.

Shearwater - The Covers Album 13 Dec 2013

There are a couple of misfires. The jangling straightforward cover of St Vincent's "Cheerleader" doesn't really add to the original while the Clinic cover "Tomorrow" is fine but this reviewer is not sure that it such a great song in the first place. All these minor point however disappear on immaculate covers such as the gorgeous version of David Thomas Broughtons sumptuous "Ambiguity", the plaintive Wye Oak cover "Mary is Mary" and a great highlight Meiburg's version of Baptist Generals' "F@@ked Up Life." It could be argued that as a covers album this is not an essential addition to the Shearwater oeuvre, yet if you have a passing acquaintance with this great band you would be doing them a disservice to miss this one. It certainly is not heir greatest album but there is enough on "Fellow Travellers" to keep you fully interested for Meiburg's next musical outpouring and a number of songs present which will be seen as Shearwater essentials with the passage of time.

big, dramatic, anthemic ballad-style songs 18 Dec 2013
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The 8th release from this Austin, Texas band is mostly a covers album, with nine of the ten songs
originally done by Coldplay, St. Vincent, Clinic, Folk Implosion, Xiu Xiu, others. These are big,
slowly building, anthemic ballad-style songs that are packed with emotional angst & sincerity.
Jonathan Meiburg’s enveloping voice is a dramatically passionate plea for understanding and
empathy. The softer songs have a dreamy folk edge that emphasizes the strength of the lyrics.
The mid to uptempo numbers exude a reach-for-the-sky sense of hope rising from a cauldron of
despair. “Fellow Travelers” is a rare occasion of classy, sophisticated music that comes from the
gut. Guest spots from members of Clinic & Sharon Van Etten. Similarities to the National, Mark
Lanegan, Elbow, Okkervil River, Twilight Sad, Barry Adamson, Tim Buckley, the Dears, Peter
Gabriel, Tindersticks.

An Album of Covers Worth Listening To 13 Dec 2013
By Charles B. Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
After the release of the amazing 'Animal Joy' album last year, I wondered what Shearwater's next album would be like. Well, here it is, and it's quite a delight. It's an album of cover songs of bands and artists that Shearwater has toured with over the years. Jonathan Meiburg invited the artists he decided to cover to play on the record as long as it wasn't their own song. What we get is an emotional set of songs featuring his alt/operatic vocals belting out the likes of Coldplay, Xiu Xiu, St. Vincent, Folk Implosion, Clinic, Wye Oak and more. These songs are carefully chosen, and crafted with delicate intimacy and admiration for the original artists. It's a short, concise album of songs that make for great listening. Overall, the album works, but I could have done without Folk Implosion's "Natural One" which seems misplaced, but St. Vincent's "Cheeleader", Coldplay's "Hurts Like Heaven", & Baptist Generals’ amazing “F***ed Up Life” are truly stand-outs. I'm looking forward to seeing them on tour in March.
Another worthy recording. 24 Jan 2014

Shearwater makes some of the most interesting music I've heard in the last 10 years. This recording is no exception. Haunting, beautiful and very interesting music.
