What is Feliway?

Feliway is the UK’s leading cat behaviour product scientifically proven to help stop and prevent unwanted behaviours in cats.

How do I know if my cat is stressed?

When cats become stressed they can start behaving strangely or acting inappropriately. Examples are urine marking, vertical scratching or intercat tension. However cats won’t always exhibit these extreme behaviours to show they are upset, they may appear to be withdrawn, nervous and easily startled or demanding attention. They may also groom themselves excessively or get into conflict with people, cats and other pets in the household. Upset cats may avoid social interaction, hide or can even go off their food.

How can Feliway help?

When a cat feels safe in its environment, it will rub its head against furniture, walls or the bottom of the curtains, leaving substances called facial pheromones. Feliway is a synthetic copy of this pheromone and is proven to reassure and comfort cats, helping them to cope with changes in their environment. Developed after years of veterinary research, Feliway is scientifically proven to help stop unwanted behaviour in cats.

Feliway is also available as a spray.

How to use the Feliway diffuser
  • Removal the refill vial cap.
  • Screw refill vial onto diffuser unit.
  • Plug the diffuser into an electric socket.
  • Leave the diffuser switched on continuously.
  • Diffuser refill should last 4 weeks
  • It covers an area of 50-70m2
  • Do not plug in behind a door, curtain or behind/underneath furniture.
Feliway Refill

Feliway Refill requires an existing Feliway Diffuser. The Feliway Diffuser continuously releases the comforting facial pheromone throughout the home. The diffuser is ideal to prevent or stop indoor spray marking, vertical scratch marking or conflicts between cats sharing a household. Using a Feliway diffuser before stressful events such as, building work/redecorating, moving home, arrival of a new baby or pet or returning from a cattery stay or vet visit will help your cat cope and prevent any unwanted behaviour occurring. The diffuser will last approximately 4 weeks and covers 50-70m2. To add as further support to the Feliway Spray in scratching and urine spray marking.

After a recent break-in one of my two cats started acting a bit schizt and developed behavioural problem - no doubt due to stress. He started constantly meowing and prowling around, back and forth, like a caged bear sent crazy in a Chinese or Eastern European zoo.

He also started defecating on the floor around the house which, as well as being gross, was pretty embarrassing when I had friends round. This is called 'middening' and is a sign your cat is uneasy in its home. Basically the break-in and the intruder had left him stressed and he was displaying all the classic symptoms.

Seeing my moggy upset, was upsetting for me too, so I called a friend of mine who is a vet and she told me about this stuff, Feliway's Calming Diffuser, and I have to say it's worked a treat. It's a bit like Prozac for cats and releases calming kitty-cat pheromones into the air helping your feline to chill.

Ike stopped pooing around the house almost immediately and the prowling stopped a few days later - he still meows at me quite a but, but a lot less than he did even before the break-in; and he's a Bengal so they're a very vocal bread anyway.

All in all, both of us are very happy with the affect its had on our household. It seems to have calmed him right down. Not only that, I have been able to get a decent nights sleep for once too.

A good nights sleep is something I've not been able to enjoy since I got my two cats as both of them have always slept slap-bang in the middle of my bed making it hard for me to move about and get comfy. But since the introduction of the diffuser they've only slept on my bed once or twice - I'm guessing this is because they now prefer to sleep in the living room where the Feliway is.

This seemed to send one of my cats even more crazy (she's a bit scatty anyway) so we unplugged it.

However, when we brought a new cat (a very timid, paranoid, easily frightened kitty) into the fold, we plugged in the diffuser in the bedroom and isolated the new cat there. The new cat went from being severely depressed and lonely at her old home to being friendly and attentive within a matter of hours. It could be a coincidence but it seemed to help.

She was also very intrigued about the smells coming from under the bedroom door, as were our two on the other side, so we threw caution to the wind and after only 2 days we let them introduce themselves. My cats aren't exactly violent and territorial, and of course every cat is different, but instead of being worried and concerned about their new stinky housemate(s), they seemed intrigued and inquisitive, and once they'd all got over the initial shock of having an intruder and had a bit of a hiss at each other, we had them all sleeping together on our bed within 2 weeks. The new cat is still a bit wary some months later, as the scatty one above tries to exert her authority with a bit of rough'n'tumble, but the refill has of course now run out so I do wonder if that has had an effect.

The Feliway spray, incidentally, works a treat. Feliway recommend that you use both together and so do I.

I was a little sceptical when I first bought this but, I was prepared to give it a try. I have two cats, one which has an illness the other is fine. My ill cat had started to fret slightly and his symptons had got worse however, after using feliway he has calmed slightly and as a result his symptons are not as aggressive.
My other cat likes to sleep almost directly under the plug in at night and definitely seems more content.
I would not say this is a wonder drug however, I would definitely recommend this for nervous cats or, those cats who are ill. I will definitely continue to use this.
Someone else mentioned they could detect a slight smell - I have to say I could not smell a thing and I normally have a good sense of smell!

My eldest cat enjoys the nightlife and never wants to stay in once darkness falls, except when it is pouring with rain. Unfortunately she had to have her tail removed after being shot and, despite having to wear a collar for two weeks (to prevent licking the wound), she would not settle in the house at night. After a few sleepless nights (us) during which she dragged at carpets, doors and anything else she could get to, our vet suggested we try Feliway.

The diffuser plugs into a normal socket and the emitted scent is designed to be soothing to cats (I could detect a very faint odour but nothing unpleasant or overpowering). They are designed to work one per room and with a door closed ideally - we allow our cats to go everywhere so put one in the room where our cat normally sleeps and two more in other parts of the house. She did seem to settle more subsequently and we were able to reduce medical sedation and pain relief as well (and also get more rest ourselves).

The Feliway diffuser worked for our cat and if you have a cat that needs to be calmed down post-operatively, I would certainly give this a try. The instructions also suggest it can be used to reduce stress at other times, such as when there are fireworks, but the unit needs to be plugged in for a few days before it becomes fully effective, so it needs to be bought in advance ideally.

This is the refill for the Diffuser, which you need to purchase separately (one unit comes with the diffuser).
