I've resisted buying a pair of Felcos for many years: I've felt their expense hasn't been justified. How wrong I was! I finally decided last year that constantly replacing my secateurs every couple of years (I have lots of pruning to do which wrecks them eventually) was a waste and I should go for the kind where the parts can be replaced, which means buying a pair of Felcos.

Luckily I then won a pair of Number 8s (Classic, Ergonomic, High Performance, Bypass) in a competition which saved me the trouble of choosing from the mind boggling list of options and I've been very happy with their performance ever since despite them being slightly heavier than the usual type I buy. Their red handles are practical too as I no longer lose them in my garden. Number 8s are designed for larger hands, but that's fine: my hands are quite large and the curved handles fit comfortably. People with smaller hands might like to look at the smaller secateurs in the range, a number of people I know with hands smaller than mine are very happy with the number 2 model.

    First impressions...

The safety catch's a little stiff and opens in the opposite direction to my previous pair, but I soon got used to that. Once opened they don't have a habit of unexpectedly shutting with the safety catch on like others I've had; definitely a plus point. I love the ready oiled cutting surfaces and the slick sound they make as I open and shut them. The positioning of the cutting 'head' is different to what I'm used to, so I had to really concentrate in getting the angle right for cutting. One immediate advantage: I can cut much thicker stems than usual, up to an inch in diameter without much extra effort (and pressure on my elbow) at all.

They are undoubtably a quality product with a price to match.
I am not sure why the handles spring open so wide making the first grip so difficult and my hands are not particularly small.
Be aware that the coil spring on all Felco models is liable to become dislodged. If you are lucky you find it and it is then easily refitted. If you are unlucky spare springs are available.

I now realise I have wasted a lot of money buying inferior secateurs for the last 20 years. These are excellent and I keep them hidden from my husband as he tends to use secateurs to cut branches which are too thick for the product. If I ever buy another pair it will definitely be Felco. Seems like the gardening presenters prefer them to, although I did see Carol Klein using a pink handled pair of secateurs recently.

These secateurs are simply brilliant. They are very well made(Swiss made), nice to grip and make pruning (branches up to 1 inch thick) really easy! They may be more expensive than other makes but well worth the money, as they can be completely taken apart and rebuilt (each component can be replaced individually - should the need arise). With proper care these secateurs should last a very long time!

These secateurs are brilliant! they are well made and feel very comfortable to use even for prolonged use.

For many years I had thought about purchasing a pair of these secateurs but every time I needed to buy a new pair of secateurs I came to the same conclusion which was that I just could not justify paying so much money for a pair of secateurs, so I would often buy a cheaper pair which would often work adequately for a short time but they would all invariably wear out often due to an inherent fault or I would simply loose them! Annoyingly it was often the ones that actually performed quite well that I would loose! Anyhow the final straw came when I saw Fiskars latest offerings which included a pair which had a gear mechanism that greatly reduced the amount of effort needed to operate them, I purchased a pair of their PowerGear hand pruners and also a pair of their so called Professional hand pruners. After only a month or two of using the PowerGear pruners a major inherent fault became apparent which was that the gear mechanism was made of plastic which gradually became so worn that they became inoperable. The professional hand pruners worked quite well until........yes you guessed it I lost them! So I checked which pair of Felco secateurs would be suitable for my needs as they produce many different models and purchased these number 8 Ergonomic secateurs. They are absolutely brilliant! as soon as you handle them you know that they are well made and fit for the job, there is a good reason that these secateurs look similar to the ones they were producing many years ago and that is because the basic design works. I just hope I don't loose these!

The best secateurs money can buy? Maybe certainly very well made, exceptionally sharp and easy to use. The spring is a little sticky and the blade can stick a bit but a quick wipe with WD40 and they're perfect again. Expensive but well worth it.

I have always bought cheap secateurs in the past but would have saved myself a lot of money if I had bought these to begin with, they are outstanding.
