Product Description

Review

'Millions of people suffer from body image concerns. Some are paralyzed by them. Here, Dr. Sabine Wilhelm offers a systematic, scientifically based program of self-treatment. For many, this will be a welcome alternative to expensive professional therapy.' - Harrison G. Pope Jr., MD, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; coauthor of The Adonis Complex

'Until now, very little self-help material was available on body dysmorphic disorder, a distressing condition that can lead sufferers to depression, unneccesary cosmetic surgery, and even suicide. If you are struggling with body image problems or care for someone who is, this excellent book offers very helpful guidance.' - David Veale, MD, FRCPsych, Consultant Psychiatrist in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, London, UK

Product Description

In a society where a blemish or "bad hair" can ruin an otherwise perfect day, and airbrushed abs dominate the magazine rack, many people feel ashamed of their bodies. Whether they’ve stopped socializing because of an imagined defect or spent thousands on skin care, hair growth products, or plastic surgery, Feeling Good About the Way You Look helps men and women with exaggerated concerns about their appearance break free from the mirror and get their lives back on track. Self-assessment tools help readers understand their problems and decide whether they should be evaluated for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a severely distressing level of dissatisfaction with one's body. Step-by-step guidelines teach them to overcome discouraging thoughts, curtail obsessive appearance rituals, and see themselves realistically. With a chapter for friends and family members who suspect a loved one may be struggling with body image issues, this is the perfect starting point for those who want to help themselves or someone they care about make peace with their looks.

Real Truth 8 May 2008

Format:Hardcover
Body Image Blues - Vanity or Anxiety Disorder?
She sits in front of the mirror, obsessively checking and rechecking her face. She sees imperfections everywhere in her skin; pimples and blackheads mar her complexion. She asks her mother and her friends if she's ugly. Of course not, they are always telling her. She cancels plans with her friends, doesn't go out much, and has a hard time holding a job because she feels like people are constantly staring at her flawed face. Others think that she is simply vain. What they do not realise is that she cannot help the way she acts. The reality is that she suffers from a mental disorder known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) so she does not deserve added insults... poor thing

This book explains BDD in a way that it can be understood

What can i say but an excellent book!

New hope for those with BDD 24 Aug 2006
By Scott M. Granet - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found Sabine Wilhelm's book to be both easy to read and very informative. The step by step approach detailed in the book is exactly what is needed for patients and clinicians alike. I have enthusiastically been recommending it to all of my clients who have BDD, and to colleagues interested in learning more about it. This book offers new hope to the millions of people worldwide who live with this troubling, but treatable disorder.

I'm Impressed! 11 Jan 2011
By Hi there :) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just started this book and I haven't completed it yet, I'm extremely impressed already. This book is a powerful resource. It is well written and it works! It was written for us folks with small/large body image dilemmas (mostly non-eating disorders).

It can be used as a self help resource or in conjunction with therapy. It can even be given to your therapist as a resource for them to help you. I struggle with acne scars and I am relieved to find the first pages (and subsequent pages) directly address this issue.

This book gives hope and help. I can't say enough positive about this book. It is life-changing.

God bless the author
