Product Description

Product Description

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Grammy Award winner BILLY PAUL began singing at the age of 12 and sometimes performed on local radio shows. Drawing inspiration from his family's collection of 78's, Paul would incorporate Jazz, R&B and Pop into his style, resulting in a unique sound that became synonymous with Philadelphia International Records throughout the 1970's. Billy became well known on his local circuit, singing in clubs and later around college campuses all over the country, which later led to him performing live with some of the biggest names in black music of the 60's and 70's including Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Roberta Flack to name a few. Having signed to the Gamble label Paul released his first LP FEELIN' GOOD AT THE CADILLAC CLUB in 1968, which started a long standing and very successful relationship with the formidable song writing and production duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. FEELIN' GOOD... is an exciting studio- live club date recording combination and was produced entirely by the man himself.

A hidden classic!!!

I collected a few of the PIR Billy Paul reissues that BBR has been releasing over the last few years and I have enjoyed each of them. I almost passed this one by as I did with the vinyl years ago as I assumed from the title that it was a Live album. Instead it is Paul's first studio album we he self-produced way back in 1968 which led to Gamble and Huff signing him. I was frankly shocked to discover that it is by far my favourite release of his and instantly one of my favourite BBR releases. In the liner notes, a new interview with Billy tells us how he got the album together and why he chose the covers he did. The version of On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever) is peerless. Quite simply, just get this. It is truly wonderful and utterly beautiful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great album, shame about the CD 19 Jan 2010
By Glen Billingham - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The original album was a spectacular live engagement for the very jazzy Billy Paul. He puts in a great performance on a variety of standards.Unfortunately this CD-R production
does him no favours. The sound is just OK, but the real disappointment is the quality of the production which almost treats the buyer with disdain. There is a list
of the songs, but no writers or producers (how long would that have taken?). The cover art is perfunctory. One grainy shot of the original cover and no back cover. For a
CD that has Sony and Legacy printed all over it, this should have been better. To make matters worse my copy jumped all the way through! Shameful.

This was one I have been waiting for to go to CD. Thank you,Amazon, for fulfilling my decades dream. This is a rare gem by Billy Paul. He sings some standards but wirh his own unique stamp.
5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Paul's unique style has always brought a pleasant feel to my spirits. 15 Dec 2012

Being a old school l;over of blues and R&B, Billy has always given me melodies that are slightly off the regular path but provided a unique sound that is eclectic in its' nature and soothing to the soul.
