Product Description

CD Description

* Percussion legend Bill Summers came to San Francisco from Detroit. By the early 70s he had established himself as part of the competitive music scene and when Herbie Hancock was forming a group to play his new jazz fusion sound, he chose Bill as his percussionist.

* The group's first record was "Headhunters", which became the biggest-selling jazz album of the time, and made stars of both Herbie and the group. Bill's complex style revolutionised jazz percussion, and he became one of the most in-demand session players around and has appeared on hundreds of records since.

* "Feel The Heat" was Bill's first album for the jazz label Prestige. It is a brilliant amalgam of jazz, soul and Latin, produced by Skip Scarborough and featuring the vocals of Diane Reeves. It features four slices of high quality soul and four percussive work outs, including the jazz dance classic `Brazilian Skies'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Debut Disc from Summers Has A Split Personality, 16 Aug 2010
By John L. Hughes, Jr. "hughes_jr" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Feel The Heat (Audio CD)
Herbie Hancock percussionist Bill Summers stepped out on his own with this 1977 debut produced by Earth, Wind & Fire songwriter Skip Scarborough ("Can't Hide Love", "Be Ever Wonderful"). The first four songs (Side One on the Vinyl Version) feature four mid-70's styled funk/soul songs. "People Know" sounds like an EWF reject, while the opener "Just A Matter Of Time (Before The Beat Gets Your Mind)" is fun because it's a kick hearing future Grammy winning jazz singer Dianne Reeves singing about getting down to the funky beat (oh well, we all have to start somewhere). Bassist Charles Meeks' timid vocals on "No One" is no match to the smoking smoldering vocals that Phyllis Hyman unleased on her version of this song that was recorded for her debut album.

The last four songs (Side Two) is where this album really catches fire. Four intense Latin-Jazz compositions starting with the jazz-fusion dancefloor classic "Brazilian Skies". Lovely scat vocal colorations, intense percussion work, Latin chants (especially on the closer "Drum Suite"), and smoking hot keyboard work by Mark Soskin make this album memorable. In fact, Summers should have ditched the blah soul numbers and concentrated on hot percussive workouts for this debut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chill Latin Jazz-Funk, 9 Aug 2007
By Fractalfungi - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Feel the Heat [Re-Issue] (Audio CD)
"It's Just a Matter of Time" starts this album off right in a bit of soulful funk. As the beautiful album unfolds, it steadily blends Latin rhythms into the mix. Get this album!
