5.0 out of 5 stars The Best British Book for a Frugal Cook 27 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this book back in the recession of the early 1990's. At that time, I had to feed/clothe/house two adults on my (very small) receptionist's salary. It helped enormously! During one particularly bad month, I managed to feed us both on 20 of fresh/frozen groceries (vegies, meat, milk, etc) and the recipes I learnt from this book.
This is the most used cookbook I own (and I have dozens).

This book was extreemly useful! I was bought it as a present and found that it was just what I needed. I didn't realise just how imaginative you could be for 4 a day! I would recomend this book to any family man or woman whether on a tight budjet or not. You realy realise how much money you waste feeding your family when this doesn't have to be the case. An exellent book I will use time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step back in time! 7 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book in about 1989. Foolishly I got rid of it during a massive declutter and always regretted it.

Great little book for bare bones cookery. Obviously you cannot feed your family for so little these days, sadly, but the recipes are nutritionally sound and it is such a shame that young mums these days are not encouraged to feed their babies and kids fromt the word go on this kind of food, so they don't develop the taste for highly processed and instant meals.

Worth every penny. Bernadine Lawrence pops up now and again on a forum I use and she says she still uses these recipes - and that's because they are so good.

Buy it - it's also a great read. :)
