This book is truly unbearable to read at times. It's a story of triumph of adversity and focuses in on one of the most memorable cultural events of the late 20th century, LiveAid. The true heroes of Birhan's story are her father who carried his daughters on his shoulders in an epic journey to life, the men and women at A-CET and surprisingly perhaps Bob Geldof, who stepped up and put his money where his mouth was, highlighting war and famine in Africa and focusing attention on the men, women and children who were dying needlessly. The shame is, as the East Africa famine shows, nothing's really changed.
