5.0 out of 5 stars Superb story of a British engineering giant. 5 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This is a superb autobiography of a British engineering giant, whose stature in my opinion is easily in the same order of magnitude as Brunel or Watt and who has sadly been overlooked. The story highlights the British disease, in the poor way we treat our innovators, and shows how Fedden tried to overcome the immense barriers put in front of him. Life in this country could be so different if we had listened to him ( and others of his ilk) many years ago, we would indeed be "Great Britain" and not second rate Europeans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good on technicals 4 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although he was a tremendously contributor to aero engine development and success of Bristol Aeroplane Company this seems to be the only biography. Bill Gunson was a great technical writer with clarity to technical and non technical alike so that side is very well covered but unfortunately Sir Roy remains a one dimensional figure and we get no insight into his soul and his relationships. The somewhat stormy relationship with Bristol board members is delat with but greater insight into the personalities would have made the story less one sided. But overall a welcome biography of a great pioneer and brilliant intuitive engineer.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Guy what a situation what a story. 6 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Just imagine working for a company which only produced the goods according to their own - preferences. Engline development was not an ongoing process it was only initiated when an actual requirement from the Government was made out in a contract. Everything was frozen and nothing could be changed unless the powers that be gave their permission to move on and so engines which gave every indication of being able to produce far more power were stuck in suspension awaiting the signat from above. We were held to ransom by this Company.

The long suffering Chief of The Bristol Engine works was Roy Fedden he had to tolerate this kind of living death while working for Bristol Aircraft he led the team which designed and manufactured the Worlds best post war radial engine in the 1920s. During the 1930s he and his team produced a wide range of more modern poppet valve and sleeve valve engines which only began to realise their true power potential after 1944 when he had left the Bristol Aircraft company. after being sacked by the Management for accepting a Knighthood from The Government .

He was a martinet but he was also an inspired aircraft engineer and the radial engines he and his team designed and evelpoed were more than a match to any radial aircraft engine manufactured anywhere else in the World. It was a shameful fact that our aircraft manufacturers where indulging themselves so such an extreme degree - at our expense during the War who knows how many lives this kind of selfish behaviour had cost .. .

4.0 out of 5 stars The early powerful aeroplane engines 7 Jan 2001
By Derek J May - Published on
This book provides the background detail of Sir Roy Fedden, who was at Cosmos Engineering in the late 1920's when Rolls-Royce were developing the predecessors to the Merlin. Rolls-Royce tried to get Fedden (Later to go to Napiers)to join their company as a design assistant to Henry Royce, but to no avail. It was Fedden who sorted-out the Curtiss OX-5 engines shipped to England from USA. Anyone interested in the detail of Rolls-Royce and/or Napiers and/or this exciting period in aeroplane piston engine development will want to read this very readable detailed account.
5.0 out of 5 stars a great work about a great man. 19 Jan 2012

This well written effort delves into the life and times of Roy Fedden, giving many insights into this curious and immensely successful man, along with the engines he and his teams created. There was far more to Roy Fedden than just the Jupiter engine!
