3.0 out of 5 stars Only for Bernard Herrmann fanatics, 14 Nov 2011

This review is from: Feature Film (Paperback)
I only purchased this item for the cd, which I was told contained the most complete recording of Bernard Herrmann's "Vertigo" score. The rerecording by James Conlon is excellent and, if you're a diehard Herrmann fan, then the I suppose the price I paid (about $48 US) is no more expensive than a pricey import cd. The price reflects the cost of the book the cd comes in, which was pretty much worthless as far as I was concerned. If you like artsy photographs of a conductor conducting his orchestra, with a few film stills from "Vertigo" tacked on here and there, then you'll love it. There is a little packet of information included in the back of the book which talks about the film from which the book and recording are drawn, but I doubt I will ever bother with the book again. Since this seems to have gone out of print and is going for much higher prices than I paid, I can't recommend shelling out large amounts of money for it. Perhaps someday they will reissue the recording alone; Conlon really did do a nice job. Until then, there is another fine rerecording by Joel McNeely on Varese Sarabande Records.
