A glorious book ... 17 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
I had limited wood-working experience before I started, but found the author's instructions to be clearly written. The author's passion for his subject is infectious! He breaks every stage with a double page spread that shares his favourite canoeing spots (unfortunately for me all in the U.S.), tips and experience. I found these breaks helped keep me motivated and keen (the whole project takes over 100 hours, although this includes making your own seat and paddle which you could just buy if you wanted to).

There were a few places where my complete lack of wood-working knowledge held me up (there are a couple of places in the instructions where a small amount of knowledge is assumed), but none caused me much bother once I'd thought about it for a bit. The only other difficulty I had was tracking down local equivalents of the American timbers used in the construction (a bit of web surfing and a few phone calls sorted out equivalents and/or suppliers of American timbers, however).

I enjoyed the book very much and love my little canoe!

Both informative and interesting 5 Nov 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Mac takes you through the process of building your own little canoe. His practicle, common sense approach to building inspires confidence in the novice builder. The sections on his own paddling experiences are great motivation to get started. I built my Wee Lassie II straight from the book, with great results...and now I'm enjoying my own paddling experiences!

It is a jewel 29 Nov 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is both inspirational and practical. The plans and procedures are as detailed as you would like, and the methods described can be applied to other projects as well. The author's personality really comes through. After reading this book, I really want to build this canoe. The only question is how do I explain to my wife why I am building a one-seater?

If you are thinking about making a strip canoe this is a great book to have. But I don't think it is the only one you'll need to embark on the project. It has some useful tips you may not find elsewhere and gives another perspective on how-to-do-it; but it is a slightly featherweight book padded with some extraneous diversions into the joys of canoeing the rivers of Florida, Adirondaks, etc. It attempts to be a complete guide and includes information on paddle making and sailing rigs, as well as plans. It is worth getting but, if you're inexperienced in the techniques, be prepared to add another book, eg. "Canoecraft" by Ted Moores, for the full picture.
