Book Description

Davie Armstrong struggles hard for his place at Cock Shield Farm and finds himself at odds with the owner, a man of mordant temper and villainous pride. He watches as his master, Angus McBain, publicly thrashes young Molly Geary for refusing to name the man who made her pregnant. And yet, only an hour later, Davie sees the two of them alone in the malthouse, and learns that the child is McBain’s.

But the master’s wife is also pregnant. And a few months later the birth of the McBain’s son, Amos, unleashes violence and tragedy at the farm. Born emotionally and physically crippled, Amos will learn to wield the power of frightening intensity over everyone around him…

Feathers in the Fire is a dark tale of love, loss and redemption set on a tenant farm at the end of the nineteenth century.

4.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB! 11 Dec. 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The perfect gift for all readers of historical fiction is THE ROMA VICTRIX WINE BEAKERCalix Imperium, Roma Victrix Pewter wine beaker
Read this book in the 70's when I was a teenager, recently re-read it and now I remember why it has always been in the back of my mind as a great story. Catherine Cookson brings to life Cissie and the Brodie family, struggling to survive against all odds as only an author who has experienced hardships and come from the bottom up can. I always feel that Catherine Cookson "knows what makes people tick". The dialect of the common people in that part of England during that era is fun to read. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont expect to sleep until the last page. 13 Oct. 2001
By A Customer
This is one of Cooksons best books.A dark tale..but in true Cookson has the power to make the reader laugh with its unexpected twists and turns...of the fate of the lives of the people at the farm.
As to be expected from this author...a first class read.
You will be involved in the lives of her get to know them as well as your nieghbours..perhaps better.
Share thier sadness and and hate them..then as Ms Cooksons takes us along our opinions change ..real people in real situations
the true emotions of people are layed bare for the reader.
Set in a bleak landscape..the depth of her characthers..astound the reader..that so much ..hate,,and raw emotion shine out in this book
One Cookson book is never enough for the reader
it is the start of a relationship with this Author that will stay with you a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive 6 Mar. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This booked had my interest from the first few pages. I chose 5 stars because the story took me into the lives of the characters and leaves me missing the characters when I've finished the book. This book gives everything that I have come to expect from Catherine Cookson books.
