Product Description

Book Description

A new series of ghost writing from the underground, with an introduction by Matt Whyman.

Product Description

Kamil knows something sinister is going on in the woods. Deep amongst the trees, the old Squawk Box poultry farm is stirring back to life, but it doesn't seem to be processing chickens, and the villagers are too scared to ask questions. Questions like... Why is Mister Petri, owner of the Squawk Box, supplying the enormous Cosmina Barbescu with extra rations? What has the local schoolmistress witnessed at the farm, and how does she keep losing her fingers? Why is that flock of chickens following Kamil everywhere he goes, and did that rabbit just explode? Together with Flori, the poacher's daughter, Kamil investigates a mystery smelling mankier by the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oddly satisfying but gruesome at the same time., 3 Feb 2009

I often wonder where authors get their weird and wonderful inspirations from to write novels.......all I can say about this person whosoever he/she may be, is that they write really ghastly but good books.

The story is set in a sort of communist society where there is only one employer and he owns the now redundant 'Squawk Box' which was once a poultry factory. However, because of the demand for organic chickens the business goes bust that is until Kamil our hero ventures with his dog, Solace, into the woods and sees and hears strange goings on. Is the Squawk Box coming back to life or is something more sinister going on and why have three people gone missing, rabbits exploded and the Schoolmistress lost some of her fingers?

It does have rather an icky kind of end which I enjoyed and it reminded me in a way of an old film Soylent Green. I will not say more for fear of a 'spoiler'.

I wouldn't say this was a childrens book, more for young teens and those of us that are young at heart but still enjoy a good fright.

Looking forward to the sequel.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
A superb children's/young adults' book aimed at approximately an audience of 12 upwards. Having read a proof copy there are some extras due to be in the final product that would prove interesting for many older children, as it is, the story line can be enjoyed and understood by a competent reader of about 12.

The story revolves around Kamil, who knows there is something sinister going on in the woods not far from where he lives. The place and time that Kamil lives in, is going through a hard time; food is scarce and a weekly bag is provided by Mister Petri who is the owner of the Squawk Box. In it's time, the Squawk Box was the poultry farm where many of villagers worked and it seems to be coming back to life but without the poultry. So what exactly is going on?

Kamil and his friend Flori begin an investigation into what turns out to be a very gruesome mystery. Flori's father is a key figure, giving Kamil the courage (without realising so) to explore circumstances in his own family. There is also the school teacher, Miss Milea, who changes suddenly after a visit to the Squawk Box. Finally, there are other fantastically described characters to keep you turning the pages.

It is a well written novel that deserves 4.5 stars out of 5. The reason I couldn't give it 5/5 is simply because it took a little while to get into it and as a young adults novel, it may lose some readers this way. Whilst I wasn't intrigued by the introduction of this reclusive author, I do feel some younger readers may be. On publication it is well-priced at £6.99 as it really does have you turning the pages after getting a quarter of the way into it.

An enjoyable and exciting book and one I can't wait to share with the children I work with.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Feather and Bone is a curious, spooky, early-teen story, but never the less quite engaging and with a thrilling climax.

Kamil lives in a strange world. His town is very deprived with people depending upon handouts from Mister Petri and his 2 large sons. Hidden in the forest is the "Squawk Box", the old chicken processing plant, which is rumoured to be in operation again. Is it back in operation again? Where is Mister Petri getting all the meat from for the food he is providing. Why do people go missing? Why is Cosmina Barbescu getting larger and larger.

Nobody dare go near the Squawk Box, but when Kamil does, what he finds is very disturbing and it fills him with fear. Will Kamil uncover the grim facts behind the Squawk Box and why are rabbits exploding - read on and find out. A very good, gripping and gruesome story.
