5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific album, shame about the cover!, 15 Nov 2006
By C. Porter (Worcester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hard to pick which Topley album is better - this one or Black River. But who cares, they are both chock-full of terrific tunes. There is a real sense of humid urgency in 'Magnolia' and 'So Bright' for which cover art in the vein of 'Spanish Wells' may have been more appropriate. But picking holes in the art presentation is beneath an analysis of the music, so let's press on!

It's just that Topley deserves a bigger audience, and marketing strategies like this don't tell you anything about the man or his music! Oh well. The music...

Just terrific. He's really stretched his styles a bit further on this set of songs, even dabbling in reggae on one of them. The excellent 'Desire Is Sad' just oozes class and maturity, and of course that chocolate voice of his holds the disparate strands of the songs together.

'Back To Believing' is straightforward rock'n'roll ("You'll be down on your bended knee, begging to be my bride once more"), 'Closer To You' and 'Highway One' deal with yearning and loss/love brilliantly.

Yep. The album zips along with zest and confidence, and even the predatory, pea-soup growlings in 'Magnolia' don't seem to clog the album's momentum.

Recommended unreservedly.

Why the hell isn't Topley a massive star? (Ah, we're back to image again, aren't we?). Sigh. This is great, great music. Treat yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!!!, 12 Jan 2005
By paintpop "james" (london england) - See all my reviews
This is quite simply the best album I have ever heard. There is not one bad track but a collection of beautifully crafted songs. William Topley is the UK's Eva cassidy, we are gonna miss the chance of enjoying his genius. Get on board now and delight in this man's talent, I promise you won't turn back but will have his whole collection within 3 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better late than never., 9 Mar 2009
I have only just recently been turned onto the voice of Mr Topley, and this is the first of his albums I have heard. Fantastic doesn't do justice to his work. A great mixture of musical styles - rock, pop, reggae, blues - and all held together by what I think could be the best male vocals currently around. The band appear tight and skilled too. Wish I had come across Mr T a few years earlier!
