A great 3 disc box set featuring Director John Gulager's spendidly savage flesh eating creations.
Feast is a great opener where a group of strangers in an isolated bar come under attack from a group of killer desert dwelling creatures. In a fast moving first ten or so minutes the cast are introduced and promptly decimated by both the creatures and a series of self inflicted accidents as the cast shoot out at their fast moving attackers whilst dodging from showers of various nasty bodily fluids. Setting the scene for the rest of these movies watch out for a series of over the top grisly incidents and for boundaries of good taste to be set to one side as the group are whittled down and the survival instinct takes precedence over what's best for the group. It's over the top in the same way as The Evil Dead was and has to be seen in that light.
There's some great low budget special effects and fine performances by Henry Rollins, Clu Gulager, Balthazar Getty and several others that raise what could have been just another monster movie to something pretty special.
There's a fair few extras on this disc as well with a couple of documentaries, making of..., deleted scenes and bloopers.
Feast II: Sloppy Seconds is more of the same but Gulager ratchets up both the gore and bad taste to the nth degree. Our survivors make it to a nearby town and pretty soon some under attack from the creatures and three vengeance seeking female bikers. Throw in two midget wrestlers, plenty gratuitous nudity and some set pieces including one with a catapult and a splendidly tasteless one where one character who has no redeeming features at all seems to have rescued a baby from the creatures only for...no you have to see it. Please do not watch if you are in any doubt at all, even I winced but it just fits the general feel of the movie. Well done John Gulager for not copping out.
The Feast III disc features a couple of brief, but informative and entertaining documentaries as extras.
Feast III: The Happy Finish has the remains of our group joined by an odd prophet who appears to be able to control the creatures and a martial arts expert (Jean-Claude Seagal....nice) as they continue their fight for survival in the town sewers. Again the gore is well over the top and the boundaries of taste are stretched to breaking. The final scene is well in keeping with the series as a whole, albeit bang out of left field.
There are no extras on the last disc.
Together these three movies make a great collection that monster lovers with a liking for over the top tasteless scenes should love. It is a family movie package, albeit a Gulager family movie package, nice one John.
